If 45% of the Med's coastline is shared with Africa then it looks like Africa's coastline is much greater. I suspect that it is a lot less than 45%. That sneaky bit to the right of Italy (up and own) is quite long, as is the area between Greece and Turkey plus the coastline going round all the islands.
yes, you are probably right: I was really making the point of 'the three continents'...and just wildly guessing the ratios lol
 

All down to the optical illusion of the Mercator Projection
Wouldn't the Mercator projection have the opposite effect - things further away from the equator are actually smaller than they appear on the map? I would guess the the north side of the med is a very ragged coastline with lots of inlets whereas africa has a much smoother coast. The med probably also includes islands within the coastline measurements
