In an unforseen consequence, this decision turned the book publishing world on its head - and was generally terrible for writers. As publishers could no longer carry big inventories of older titles, print runs became much smaller, publishers way more risk-averse, and authors (esp normal, mid-table sorts who don't command huge audiences) had to write much more often as titles proliferated.

Things might be different now in the era of e-books. But I'd be surprised if things has swung back in favour of the authors if music is any guide.

So Pepsi and Shirley were eye candy who couldn't really sing.
Dunno about that, they were certainly the backing singers for Wham as their popularity grew, DC Lee presumably went onto other things. How much of P&S’s contribution was visual or audible is in the eye or ear of the beholder I guess.
