Groucho's Fact Hunt

The origins of “in the limelight,” which refers to being the focus of public attention, are linked to a type of stage lighting that was popular in the 19th century. The “lime” in limelight has nothing to do with the green citrus fruit but rather with a chemical compound, calcium oxide, also known as quicklime. In the early 1820s, English inventor Goldsworthy Gurney, improving on the work of earlier scientists, developed a blowpipe that burned hydrogen and oxygen to create an extremely hot flame. When Gurney heated calcium oxide in the flame it produced an intense white light, dubbed limelight.

It was also incredibly dangerous and a number of theatres across the states burned down before its use was discontinued.

Brian May and Freddie Mercury lived 300 yards from eachother as teenagers but didn’t meet until just before they formed Queen.
In addition (specialist subject alert), they were first introduced (Freddie to Brian May and Roger Taylor) in the Flying Picket on Hardman Street.

And famous scouse music person Ken Testi was the first person to put Freddie on stage. At his first gig, he was so shy he sang with his back to the audience.

Was actually rather reserved off stage. I assume you all know he lived in The Dovedale Towers on Penny Lane for a while? Should be a blue plaque imo.

Queen were huge in Merseyside and Cornwall before anywhere else. The famous baseless microphone look was because, at a gig in St Helens college, he tried to pick the mic up and the base fell off.

And for years the band held their fan club conventions in Southport - they even arranged for the very first screening of Highlander to be shown in Merseyside at one such gathering, before the official premier.
