James Coburn turned down the 'Man with no name' role because the fee of $20,000 was too small...so who do you know who would do it for 20grand...try Clint Eastwood.

Frank Sinatra, who had done a detective role before turned down Dirty Harry as he was catching some stick for his alleged mafia connections and thought it would be bad for his 'Image'

Obesity is contagious.

A recent experiment took pairs of human twins, in which one twin was fat, one lean. Samples of their gut microbial flora were then transferred to pairs of germ-free mice. In each case, the mice with the 'fat bacteria' became obese, the other one stayed lean.

All part of research into the microbiome - the ecosystem of bacteria we have in our guts. Weighs in at about a kilo, all told, and has massive genetic diversity. Advances in genetic technology means we're only just starting to put a dent in understanding how it interplays with human health, but seems certain to be v important in metabolic conditions like obesity and diabetes.

Frank Sinatra was also the name in mind when they wanted to make Die Hard, many many years before it came to fruition as an action film.

Deep Purples classic - Smoke on the Water.

Was inspired by real life events. In December 1971 the band where at Rolling Stones mobile recording studio at Montreux in Switzerland. The recording studios was part of the Montreux Casino.

Whilst there, Frank Zappa played a gig at the Casino theatre, when a member of the audience fired a flare gun into the ceiling setting fire to the theatre.

A few days later Deep Purples bassist, Roger Glover had a dream that he and fellow band members had watched the smoke from the fire drifting over Lake Geneva as they stood on the Hotel balcony . He subsequently used the dream as an inspiration to write the song.

The plumb part refers simply to the plumb line used since antiquity for straight lines, loco being, I assume, an Americanism added to imply someone's being a div.

Agatha Christie uses plumb as a prefix for a few terms (plumb smart or something) to imply "straight", as we'd say "dead" clever or something.

On from there: The plumb line got its name because it was generally a lead weight, Lead in Latin was Plumbum. Also where we get the chemical symbol for Lead: Pb
