The best part of the soccer/association football bit is Australia and a few other nations also call it soccer
Exactly. In Ireland, "football" refers to the GAA sport "Gaelic football". To us, Everton play soccer and the Republic of Ireland is our soccer team. Both crap, mind you. "Soccer" is simply not an "Americanism". It is shorthand for "association" football. In fact, there's a very good chance it was the Irish who brought that term to America given the Hiberno-English influence on American-English. So, let's stop blaming the Yanks for this one.

Genuinely not arsed about the England team, especially at this particular tournament. But ever since a kid at school decided to support Brazil at USA 94, watching edgy English people's "adopted" team lose to England never fails to make me smile.

If you like Wales so much, why don't you move there?

A lot better from England.

Senegal is going to be tough, but it is the world cup, and nobody can expect any easy games at this stage.

They leave a huge amount of space in the middle of the park, a decent team will just walk right through them.

True, however, knockout stages can produce anything. It is the world cup so they will be up for it and have some very good players.

I would consider England favourites but it is nowhere near a foregone conclusion.

Maybe it is me, my belief comes from hope rather than confidence (arrogance). I have watched enough football to know that they could easily give us a game and on the day are good enough to beat us.

Agree and you just never know with tournament football but England should really be beating Senegal and they won't have Gana either who is key for them.

I am Welsh and this nonsense " they did us proud" guff. No, they were as bad a team as I have seen in years. Paige has to go, you can only win so much on endavour, at some point you need actual tactics.

Very, very poor all round
I am proud that we even got to the world cup, it's quite the achievement considering we were the smallest country to qualify (not counting the hosts as they bribed their way in) and we are the only country at the tournament who don't have our own sovereign independence.

But your right, Paige showed himself as a clueless operator. Not able to to take control of the big personalities which were past their best, and completely incapable of any form of tactical flexibility.
Brennan Johnson should have started every game.
All of the hype over the years just to fall completely flat on the biggest stage.
Hopefully a new generation can break through and we make it to the next world cup.
