Suppose so, I’m not saying he deserves to be in the squad over others, but I don’t think Trippier deserves to be anywhere near the squad either.

Good player to have in the squad, can play right or left back and take a set piece.

I just assumed with him picking Shaw they were confident he'd be fit at this stage. It's sounding like he might no even be fit for the knockouts now, so that's a really baffling call to take him as the only actual left back.

Even if they're not that good, having an actual left back will add more balance to the team. Just make sure they're covered and keep the ball on the other side if they're not up to it.

Well he doesn’t take any of the set pieces, and he can’t play left or right back very well. He is finished and shouldn’t be anywhere near the squad.

This press conference from Harry Kane is absolutely bonkers.

Saying they didn't know how to press against 3 at the back, saying they kept dropping a midfielder into defence, which is exactly what every team in the world does, and they didn't know how to deal with it.

The online Sunday papers all banging on about the camaraderie Southgate engenders in the squad...the esprit de corps. Pity about the football though..that's been played with the all the spirit of a corpse

At a certain point you have to look at your players, who are a reflection or their country's state of mind. Your arrogance is off the charts. There's a reason the US mens b'ball team f'ed up in 2004 when it wasn't even a contest in '92.

I'm not English. But I agree with you. Rio Ferdinand to Thomas Frank, a Dane, on the BBC sofa the other day: "No offence to Denmark, but..."

I mean, who do these people think they are?

Where do you fine gentlemen hail from, out of interest?

Would it be a bad idea to rest Bellingham, Kane and Saka tomorrow? They've all recently been injured and looked absolutely gassed in the last game, especially Kane and Bellingham.

It would - unless you fancy second and a last 16 match with Germany.

A draw for England and a Danish win and England play the hosts. That's a very plausible scenario.

And while I wouldn't rely on this flawed German side putting away this England side - which seems on the verge of cracking mentally if we are to listen to the press conferences attacking former players in the media - I wouldn't think this is the best route for England just yet. Because even if they somehow got over Germany, I wouldn't think they'll find Spain and then Portugal to their liking.

England need to top the group, play someone like Austria or Ukraine in the last 16, get a confidence-boosting win, and then hope the improvement can take them past Italy. They need their best players to be sure of beating Slovenia.

I see what you’re saying but I’m not sure a half fit Bellingham and Kane, performing as they did against Denmark, guarantees a win against Slovenia either

There are no guarantees. I think England need to take each match as it comes and forget about the next phase. Get the best players you have on the pitch and get the win. Plotting your way through the draw and taking liberties as you go sounds like one of Baldrick's cunning plans, and we know how they end...

Is Bellingham half fit or just tired? What I saw of England the other day suggested complete systems failure. Declan Rice looked ragged. So, I think there's more to this than people being half fit and not being able to press. Southgate must surely have been aware of this before the tournament - so where was his plan B? I wouldn't be resting anyone. I'd drop unfit players - because they aren't up to it - but I wouldn't be "rotating."

You look at a fish out of water like Arnold or a bang average water carrier like Gallagher and then the manager coming out and saying we can't replace Phillips, I'm absolutely amazed he didn't have a look at Barkley with the position he played and form he was in at Luton, he would be a perfect solution for their problems

Can’t get my head round the Phillips comment. Talking like it was when Rooney broke his metatarsal before that tournament.
