Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan

Morocco will give Spain a game. It's a local derby. Spain are not all that on the evidence of this group. They are fragile. The Portuguese might grind a win against them. I'd take France or England to beat them when it counts.
Totally agree.

Obviously a good team and capable of beating anyone but, as we saw against Germany and Japan, when the other team runs as much as them and presses as much as them, they are vulnerable.

They haven't got anywhere near the talent level of a decade ago. They're all good and in some cases very good players but no great players at the moment.

The likes of Pedri, Gavi and Ansu Fati could end up being great players but they're not there yet. And the likes of Busquets and Alba are past their best.

If Morocco bring the fight and don't make mistakes they've got a chance.

The lesson Spain should have learned from 2008-2012 is that most the time this style is going to win when it's 1-0. Occasionally you might score a bunch but more often than not a billion low risk passes goes nowhere.
They took more risks in 2008 with Luis Aragones and were much more watchable and exciting going forward.

Del Bosque was more about keeping the ball to eliminate risks. Thus, the lowest scoring world champions in history.

The whole of the ball over the whole of the line when viewed from above.
Makes sense.

If they want to clear it up and make it more obvious when a ball is out of play, do it the other way round, so that the ball, any part of it, needs to be on the INSIDE of the white line all around the pitch. If there is daylight between the ball and inside of the line from above, then it's out of play.

Germany had collectively been so pleased with themselves over the last week since their draw with Spain, I was wondering whether something like last night might happen. It was great fun watching the post-mortem on German TV last night

The older I get the less I seem to understand the rules lol

Football should not be this hard to understand.

How can a liner know if a ball has gone out of play for a throw in for example in these marginal situations without VAR assistance. They are literally guessing. If the rule was any gap between the bottom of the ball and the outside of the line then its out. The human brain / eye sight can make a much better judgement call on that than having to view it from above to be sure which they dont naturally have.

.. and dont get me started on hand ball and offside rules

What a mess!

I'm so looking forward to my 9am daily Teams call with my German colleagues this morning.

How far can I push it without being sacked lol ?

It's doing my head in how I've seen loads of people on Twitter posting images of the ball from a side-on angle like it actually proves anything ? ?‍♂️

If it were between the sticks it wouldn't have been a goal so it isn't out of play. From a birds eye view you cannot see the green between the ball and the line so it's in play.

Was it tight? Yes.
Does it look out from other angles? Yes.

But it's simple geometry. The surface is a curve.

Auf wiedersehen pet!

They've been pleased with themselves since 2006.

There was a time when they were entitled to be. That was up to the 2016 semi-final with France. Since then, it's been pure hubris.
