Trippier was England's best player tonight. Stones and McGuire played well and Kane was in the right place to score twice. Alli was dreadful after he realised that he wasn't going to get free kicks for falling over. Lingard was wasteful, Rashford was OK but didn't shoot when he should have. An okay performance but England aren't going to beat a decent team by being okay.

Stones MOTM for me, sheer class all the way, silky smooth

Wondered if anyone had said this. He is actually brilliant, such an asset to have for his teammates. Not sure where to go? Give it to John.

When he just casually cushioned a high ball into Walker's path with his instep towards the end of the game – who does he think he is.

I love him, every pass half a meter in front of the player to encourage progressive play, left or right foot no worries, compare that to the brothers grimm playing center back for us, passing it behind each other all day long or looking for touch like jonny wilkenson

Aim before the tourney was ro16/quarters depending on our draw. This result puts us on this path. A good not great performance, but plenty of positives

Did I see that right its been 12 years since England scored 2 goals in a world cup match?

Yep against Trinidad and Tobago, we only managed 3 in 4 games in 2010 and 2 in 3 in 2014. The 2006 tournament saw 6 goals scored, 5 of which came in the groups. 2002 saw the same amount, 1998 was 7, 1990 was also 7. You have to go all the way back to 1966 for the last time England scored double figures in a World Cup (11)

England really impressed me tonight. Teams from yesteryear would have probably fallen apart around the 70th minute and possibly lost - they seemed to rally together throughout.

I may eat my words after all.
