To be honest I’m not as fussed about him “running games” as much as others are. However, what I have been looking for from a £45m attacking player, is that ability to win us games. Fair play to him, these past couple of games he’s produced the moments of magic to do exactly that. No one can deny that, just like no one can deny that we saw precious little, if any of it last season. If he continues to make the difference on a fairly regular basis this season then I’ll be more than delighted to be piped down.

Can't say fairer than that Mike

Playing LM in a fat sam team that literally struggled to have a shot on goal all game would have nullified most of his qualities , as well as having to protect and cover coco . He’s playing in a team with people that have pace and he actually has options when he receives the ball. Factor in Bernard and richy but more Bernard imo he now has a player to play with that is technically as good as himself and can actually give and receive the ball well. Our style under Silva is a polar opposite to sam last year and siggy will flourish with a few others imo

Clearly that is flawed, because it says Baines is 0.4 Wins above replacement. But his replacement is Digne, who is 0.8 Wins above replacement. But his replacement is Baines, who is 0.4 WAR........
That's not how the stat works. It indicates how many wins above the league average player. It's also a lot more relevant because the way the player market works.

But to be clear, it's subjective in baseball, too, because fielding is not perfectly outcome based and very difficult to weigh relative to offense.

2) Gylfi Sigurdsson, Everton

Gylfi Sigurdsson had an underwhelming debut campaign at Everton last season, in admittedly difficult circumstances, but the club are getting their money’s worth this time around. Forced to play out of position on the left all too often under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce, the Iceland international is now flourishing in his favoured role behind the striker following the arrivals of Marco Silva and, pertinently, Richarlison. The playmaker’s figures for key passes per game have more than doubled (from 1.4 to 2.9) and he has already scored some trademark stunners this season, with four goals in eight games enough to match last season’s total from 27 matches. Rating: 7.52, up 0.62 on last season.

Yeah, that's the only part about WAR in baseball that is really hard to quantify. The hitting, running, etc, that's pretty easy and very accurate.

That's it really.

End of the day, for the outlay you want that player to step up when we are utterly turgid.

Didn't happen last season. Getting better this. Needs to keep going.
