I think we must go for 2 DMs...one being Gana and the other being Gomes. In the centre mid position i think it may be sigurdsson or Silva will rotate him and gomes between both positions and go with bernard advanced

Either way, it looks like a mess in the centre to me...cant see where the power or drive comes from...
Gomes isn't a DM though mate, he's not that good defensively compared with Gueye, McCarthy (when fit) or even Schneiderlin. He seems to be a midfielder who likes to carry the ball forward and try to pass and create. Therefore I agree with @MarcelsGoat a system with one DM and 2 CMs ahead is better. Especially for the football we want to play ideally.

But that's now you moving the goal posts of the current debate.
The point was that he doesn't get involved enough and the no touches in 10 mins was supposedly the proof.
I think we've established quickly that a forward playing holding his position needs the ball fed to him. Hence the messi scenario.

He does need the ball fed to him, agreed.

The question is though, why didn't Barkley when he played in the same position with the same team mates? Why is our number 10 unique in world football as being someone who averages a pass every 5 minutes when everyone else is at least every 2-3 minutes. How is it even possible to go through 10 minute periods without touching the ball at all, twice in just 40 minutes on the pitch when your team is dominating?

Quite easy really, you take no responsibility and hide ?

Its hard to say at this point, Silva will be making do till he gets in the players he wants, ideally he will want this :

GK
RB - CB - CB - LB
DM
CM - CM
RW -- ST -- LW

The problem I see is that we simply dont have the players to fit that system, certainly not in midfield, Gana is a good DM, but hes a chaser, not a sitter, Morgan is a good DM, when motivated, but hes a sitter and doesnt chase, thus Silva is forced to play them both. ideally he has a player who can sit, but with a good passing range and of course 2 number 8s in midfield. So that leaves us with the 4-2-3-1 that we will probably mostly play.

When Gomes is fit I will be interested to see if he gives the 4-3-3 a go, but suspect it will be Gana or Morgan playing the 6 with Iceland and Gomes as the 8.
Surely the system we play, and the players we play in that system, will depend in who and where we are playing.

For instance, when we are playing a park the bus team at home, camped on the edge of their penalty area, Walcott's pace is almost redundant. Plus we wouldn't really need a ball winner like Gana in the team. We need tricky players like Bernard and Lookman in the team and Tosun leading the line and linking play. Siggy and his set pieces would be important but we could probably afford to play him in midfield in this scenario. I'd also play Morgan as he has the ability to ping balls out wide effectively when on song. maybe Gomes could do this. I'd play a 4231

When we play the likes of Liverpool, City or Arsenal, teams that play quite a high line and like to hog the ball, we need a ball winner like Gana and we also need pace up front. I'd probably drop Tosun and put either Walcott or Riki up there with Bernard on one of the wings. I'd have a midfield 3 of Gana, Gomes and Siggy.

On Gylfi, he did play well once settled, though. It took him longer than it should have (for loads of reasons) to get to that point, but by December he had found that consistency and from that point until his injury was a steady 6-7/10 when he played, sometimes better (West Ham home, N'Castle A, Liverpool A, Swansea H)
Damned with faint praise.

100% one DM. But we dont have that player, if we had say,Neves at Wolves who weve seen last match--then we could play him as the sole DM. Perhaps im a different style, Baningime but i havent seen enough of him yet.

Gomes or Schneidedlin i think will be alongside Gana. Perhaps Sigurdsson...its all a mishmash this season and shows we need to strengthen.

It all looks unbalanced doesnt it? Whichever 3 we pick in the centre on paper.

Interesting that Brands has said Richarlison was our top target this summer, which would be a surprise to some as it wasnt a key area to focus on.

I cant see where Sigurdsson fits into a 3 which wants to counter at pace...i think this will be the next area to focus on.

Thats never been his game though has it? He is never going to dominate the ball in that way and didn't at Swansea. He can still have a role to play.
