2018/19 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Decent, again. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Someway to go until he's at the level where the constant praise puts him like.

How many sideways passes and multiple turns back on himself before inevitably knocking it back to a defender does he need to do to change your mind, C?

Btw, I didn't watch it all. Seemed he was poor in the 1st half but good in the second.

He just needs to dictate the game more.

Couldn't care less abar his passing percentage or how many crosses he contributes to. Just pick the ball up - all over the park - and control the game. That's what you're meant to do, so do it. On a consistent basis.

But it's not really what he's good at, and I don't think it's needed in that position.

I want the play to be controlled from a player deeper, and that should be Schneiderlin. If he can't do it (or goes hiding) we have Gomes, who definitely has that ability.

Gylfi is better getting on the ball in the final third and making stuff happen. That's what he needs to do on a consistent basis.

Well, I'm sorry, but he'll never be at the level we want to be at then.

Performed well so far but he needs to dictate the game in that position. It's a basic requirement of a 10 like him, who covers the ground that he does, to do.

Yes, tempo can be dictated further back too and I expect that from Gomes if he gets back to his Valencia form but not having a 10 who can also dictate will hamper us.

Is it just me who is puzzled by demands for one single player to ‘dictate’ the tempo of the entire game.

It’s literaly impossible.

No, it's not though?

He isn't and never will be a player who controls games. So let's enjoy what he's good at rather than criticising him for what he isn't?

Can he get on the ball and dictate a game like Barkley could at his best? I don't think so. But will he offer genuine quality in the final third and link the play in and around the area, creating chances/getting on the end of things. Definitely.

So if you've got a player who can do what Gylfi does, and then a player further back to really 'control' the game, then you've got a winning formula in my book, mate.

It's not. The best teams have at least one player who can do it with ease. They take over a game to how his team needs. We don't have that - not in Sigurdsson anyway.

It is P.

Again, if he can't do it. He's not the player we need.

Steady performances are fine. Contributing with an assist every now and again is fine too.

Not being able to control or take over a game, is not.

But do you criticise Davies for that? Because that isn't one of Davies' strong spots either...

He is not a player who does that. Regardless of the position he plays. He can get on the ball and set a tempo by being involved - which he is doing at the moment - but if we're wanting a player in the Arteta (peak 07-09 mode) then he's not the player for that.

No, because I don't expect that from Davies. Different players.

I do expect it from our record signing.

You've just proved my point. You don't expect it from Davies, because he's not that type of player. Neither is Gylfi, but because of his fee (which we overpaid on) you are expecting him to do so.

What successful side in England currently has the player who controls their game playing in a no.10 role in a 4-2-3-1, C?

Because Liverpool don't. Arsenal don't (they don't really have anyone, tbf), Spurs don't (Alli plays that role, Eriksen usually plays wider). Chelsea play a 4-3-3 now. United - well I don't really know what they do tbf. City play 4-3-3.

The game's moved on from that player 'in the hole' dictating the play. The role of that player in my book - in a system like Silva wants to play - is link the play in the final third and create chances there. It's why I always preferred Ross deeper in the Martinez years, as he could actually drive us forward from deep.

This is not an excuse for Gylfi not to do the minimum btw. He should get on the ball and help us craft moves together - which he has been doing, and he was key in both of our goals. Needs to keep that up.

What a difference it makes having a manager who doesn’t play hoof ball (BFS) and actually wants to play through Gilfi, he is growing into a class player for us.

There isn't a 10 that dictates tempo who stays advanced though. The whole reason that it's mostly the dms that do it is because they have the time and space to do so. They get to choose whether they try and split the lines and advance the team and tempo with their pass or move the ball around the back to slow things down.

Gylfi in the advanced position he takes up doesn't have enough time on the ball to slow the tempo down unless they are sitting on the edge of their box the whole game.
