Unless it ends up being someone like West Ham or Newcastle, who have recently seen fit to hand contracts to Wilshire and Carroll, I would have thought that it'll be a case of Everton continuing to pay some of Sigurdsson's wages. It's not ideal, obviously, but I think it's imperative that a line is drawn in the sand now. The club needs to either start taking itself seriously or stop spending money.I think with Niasse and Sandro, we are probably paying a large chunk of their wages as well (and Niasse turned down a loan move at the end). I suppose the question would be, would we be prepared to do the same for Sigurdsson?
It's not based on anything, but my personal belief is, that when managers come in, pressure is put upon them, whether overt or covert to play certain players. That a lad like Sigurdsson, is on x amount and cost y amount so you have to play him. I firmly believe that.
If you're Brands now, and Ancelotti comes and says to you, I can't work with the player, then surely you make a big call, and tell him he will be training on his own etc, and hope that ensures he lowers his demands for a transfer? Koeman did similar with Niasse, but got slaughtered for it and probably the wrong lesson was learnt at the time. It was undoubtedly a nasty thing to do, but Koeman, who's operated at elite football knows how it works. As a club, we appear to nice in all sorts of aspects.
The derby game at Anfield remains a big problem for me. It remains a big problem for me that Delph was getting into arguments with fans and offering them to come down to the ground, and he's meant to be a senior player setting an example. That Sigurdsson is still here and captain. I do wonder how boxed in we are and how saleable they are.
What I'll say about Gylfi, is he looks like a lad who knows he has no future here. I hope thats the case. Strangely he'd probably do ok at Sheffield United.
I was in favour of appointing Koeman after his spell at Southampton, having previously thought that he'd relegate them based on what happened at Valencia (I came around to the idea that for whatever reason, English football must just suit him better). In the end, he was simply too lazy to keep up with the meticulous super coaches that became popular here, but I think he was right to take a hard line with players who he had no intention of using. He also had Barkley playing the best football of his career, despite all the criticism over his handling of that situation.
I'm actually less concerned about Delph than anyone else, purely because I don't believe that he wants to be here any more than we want to see him stay. He's too full of himself to accept a backup role, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's already got his agent putting the feelers out.
