I’m sorry but 2 goals against Blackpool doesn’t suddenly make him a viable option and cancel out the absolute dross and downing of tools he’s shown for 18 months now. This is Schneiderlin all over again.
I'm hoping due to the utter shambles we've been that the players, with the addition of new quality signings, will now up their games. Fingers crossed

You would like to think with a midfield 3 of Allan, Gomes and Doucoure behind him, he could focus on attacking and assisting more. Maybe the pressure will be off and he can have a better season?.. But

I imagine if any sort of offer came in we'd be looking at cashing in now.

The problem he had playing in a new position under Carlo was adapting to a role that is the most un English in its style of play and was never going to put him in a good light in the eyes of the supporters, that being an attacking midfielder that sits in front of the back four.
A regista as it's known in Italy, think Pirlo under Ancelotti. He's not a defensive midfielder, his job is not to put a tackle in and so because we are not used to that role we say he's lazy. What he does need is two combative mids in front of him to do that job and if they're aren't there then he's exposed and it'll look as bad as it did last season.
If Carlo persists with that idea, wether it's Gylfi or Gomes doing the biz, let's have some faith and give it time, it could turn into something beautiful.
He was asked to play deeper fair enough, I just don't think he has the legs to get into positions anymore he is a player of moments and those moments are becoming fewer and fewer wherever he plays.

From The Athletic

Tuesday multiple sources confirmed the club’s interest in Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. Those sources said that United has had discussions with the player’s representatives about an eventual move to MLS. The Icelandic midfielder remains under contract at his current club through 2022.

One source said that Sigurdsson seems likely to play out the remainder of his contract with Everton, as his current deal is reportedly paying him in excess of $100,000 per week, making the soon-to-be 31-year-old one of the club’s highest paid players. It’s unlikely that his salary at D.C. United — or any other MLS club — would come close to that. That number, though, could also prove a motivating factor, an incentive for Everton to move him along.

Sigurdsson is already connected to United, albeit in a roundabout way — he made 131 appearances for Swansea City, a team part-owned by several members of D.C. United’s ownership group. The club has also remained in contact with representatives for Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, though signing the former German international anytime soon remains a relative longshot.

United has generally skewed younger in recent years, paying a club-record $5 million transfer fee for Peruvian international Edison Flores last year. There have been exceptions to that rule — most notably Wayne Rooney — but at this point, any older, higher-profile player the club would consider bringing on would have to be “a perfect fit,” a club source said on Tuesday.
