2019/20 Gylfi Sigurdsson

It was possible to play Sigurdsson when you had the speed of Gueye buzzing around midfield trying to break up opposition play and getting possession back for us.

A static midfield of Sigurrdson and Schneiderlin simply does not work.
I honestly cannot see how Tom Davies is not getting a start ahead of either of them.
Don’t rate Davies at all really, and I agree. Delph isn’t Gana and he currently has to try and do everything. Silva must see the need for legs in midfield.

That’s why we bought Gbamin and bid for the lad from Watford. So they do know that which really makes it worse. We have lost pace from the central midfield in gana and the centre defence in Zouma, makes it easy for teams to boot the ball straight and have us turned.

The Davies situation is a strange one.
It appears that Silva has reservations about him as he has had only a tiny part to play so far this season, but then last year he was made captain a couple of times.
It could be that the manager thinks Davies doesn't fit the system he wants to play... but then I would say there are some players getting regular games who do not seem to fit the system either.

On a side note, I was looking at the face of Gylfi Sigurdsson on the bench after he was taken off and to say it was stony would be a huge understatement.
I thought he looked angry, but that may just be me. I cannot help but feel that he thinks the team is not set up to best utilise his talents. How many shots on goal has he had this season ? If you take the goals away from his game then you are taking an awful lot of his game away.

Don’t think siggy is entirely at fault. Yes he may suffer a dip in form but on the other hand we are sidelining him by our over obsess ball wide crossing approach. We were not so extreme in such single minded approach last season and that is the difference for siggy.

We have one midfielder only capable of 5 yards square passes, and the other preferring to loft high and wide diagonal balls. While our fullback and wingers prefer to interchange amongst themselves and end up with crosses.

It’s like the whole team is design to play in a way that totally ignore siggy.

It's more a case of us actually setting - up as a team to accommodate him mate.

Looking back on the game nearly two days later and in a more reflective mood the major difference between the two teams was the difference in speed and tempo between Bournemouth and ourselves.
They are a limited team but work incredibly hard in midfield and in possession they attacked at pace. Their manager should have been very happy with their performance.

I thought we looked flat, I thought our tempo was slow and pedestrian, I thought that only Iwobi and Richarlison looked lively.
When Bernard and Kean came on I thought they look lively as well but at that stage it was trying to rescue a lost situation.

It isn't as if the team has changed completely , last Sunday we were missing Gomes , Gueye and Bernard from the team that was doing so well last season and Bernard was left on the bench. I think that Minna has proven to be a more than adequate replacement for Zouma.

Would like to see a 4-3-3 tested with Sigurdsson playing in the centre of the front three in a Firmino like role, with Richarlison & Kean playing off him. He is more advanced than DCL half the time anyway and is always the first to press, so why not give it a go? Iwobi & Gomes at 8's, with Delph at 6.

Close to not being an automatic selection. Can see him being benched for next away game, maybe even the SU game. I'd be pleased to see him dropped, just not been good enough.

The difficulty is, from the outside looking in it looks like the team formation is set up for him, in as much as he is given a free role.

I do wonder if we actually played him a little deeper, maybe as part of a 3, if we may get just as much out of Sigurdsson and others around.
