I am well aware, but that's what people are saying. That's EXACTLY what they are saying. And I agree with you, their logic is insane and they don't know football or understand it.

But if you find it OKAY that he doesn't hold the ball, his production per touch is insane in terms of goals, assists, key passes, whatever stupid metric you want to use. I'm not sure what there is to argue.

The other issue is that many here don't watch matches of other teams and never saw him play before he came to Everton. Last year was his least productive year, but there were pretty obvious reasons for that. It was a bad year for lots of Everton players.
Yes he has a good ratio of goals/assists to touches, there's no argument there. The problem though, is there's no obvious reason why he should have so few touches in the first place - that's what we're talking about. It seems a fairly logical suggestion that if he could manage to involve himself in the game more, he could have more influence on it. He doesn't play lovely one touch football where he receives a lot of the ball and moves it on quickly, he just goes long periods without actually touching the thing, which is incredibly frustrating when you're in the sort of situation Iceland are now, or we were often last season.

Because he was bog average.

He may be great for us next year, let's hope he is. But so far he has been a very run of the mill Everton player excuses or not.
Sure, but that year sure looks like an anomaly based on his career. And quite a few Everton players had bad years. Compared to the rest of the lot, he was good, but yes, the team as a whole was bad. We all suffered through it. I just don't understand the hate for the guy.

Yes, goals and creating goals don't matter.

Its a very simple way to look at things though. What about how the player effects the rest of the team?

Besides his loads of goals and assists have happened at other clubs, he hasnt done it much here yet so it doesn't really matter in terms of Everton.

Stats and excuses, such is modern football.

I don't remotely hate him. I just don't think he has been a good Everton player yet. I think he can be.

It can't be classed as an anomaly as he has only played one season for us. That is all you can base him off as an Everton player, what he has done elsewhere is not relevant to us.

He wasn't good compared to the rest of them. He just wasn't. He showed some flashes, that's it.

As I keep saying, big year for him next season.

Ok, fair points, but is it because he's not moving? He surely is. He's working hard to get the ball for sure. And honestly, don't you want him closer to goal? I do. I just view him as a different type of player.

Could it not be that our supporting cast was crap? Keep in mind, he almost never got to play with Coleman, Tosun, Walcott.

He also doesn't get many touches with Iceland, but that's the way they play. They just don't have the talent or the athleticism to do much else.

My guess is that this year, he'll average more like 30-35 passes a game and we will see more production as well.

Dreadful penalty, and a pretty poor display overall.

Definitely doesn't suit that deeper role. Him and Gunnarsson were gone after an hour.

Iceland went too direct though and Rohr finally realising that Mikel isn't a no.10 helped Nigeria as well.

He'll have (and has had) much better games for both us and Iceland.

He looked leggy, as did the entire Iceland side by the 60th minute. Chasing shadows in the first half in 28 degrees won't have helped.

It also showed he can't play as a deeper player in a 4-4-2. In a 4-3-3, with a sitter behind, it'd be fine, but there's too much space in a 4-4-2 and he ended up far too deep.
