But it's not necessarily a bad thing. As much as one may object morally to exploiting consumers with Halloween, Mother's and Father's Day, etc. there are tangible benefits in terms of economic growth, and in some ways it's almost like an equitable tax, as in general the poor spend less, and the wealthy more, on costumes, etc.

Sure, if people want to spend their money on crap then who am I to complain. I do get the impression that people have no idea what they're celebrating other than what they're told by marketers.

Bonfire night is another kettle of fish. I wonder if they'll have a day where they burn epitaths of Bin Laden when they finally catch him.
