Has Moyes lost the Plot ?

Fletch

Player Valuation: £5m
Is Moyes distancing himself from the dross served up over the last few weeks, I dont understand the last paragraph, Moyes is clearly saying that perhaps we should try playing hoof ball like Bolton do, when exactly in the match did we play football on the floor with free flowing passing moves ?

Quote David Moyes

"And that's not the reason we lost. We didn't defend properly and we didn't do the things that stop you losing games. Because of that we have ended up losing it. They have been told - you don't play like that and play for Everton.
"So it is up to them (the players) to sort it out now. I will help them and coach them and work with them - but at the end of the day they are the ones who cross the white line and they need to roll their sleeves up. I'll protect them, I'll protect their performances. But if they don't do basic things like head the ball and defend set-pieces, which they practice and work on - then it is themselves they need to look at."
The manager was also not happy that his side found themselves having to chase the game as a result of two goals conceded in the opening 25 minutes.
He added: "We didn't start brightly enough. I thought at times we played quite well as the game went on. It was pretty and nice to watch. But Bolton won the game with a more simple style of football so maybe we should think about getting the ball in the box and doing something similar."

He is obviously struggling to find a solution to our problem. More like trial and error now.
I'm concern with direct hoof approach. The problem is not because we can't create or score, it's about our failure to defend properly. Changing our attacking approach is not the solution. It might mess up the team.

Noone will like this, but we should drop Howard for a few games, and work on his reactions.
Yet again, he was nowhere near saving any of those goals, and all were within saving reach with a better reaction.

Yes, the team is injury stricken, but it doesn't help by having an ornament in goal.

23 goals conceded in 16 matches isn't good enough.

I think he's all over the place there. You cant be doing what he's done in the past - to hold his hand up and say I'm to blame for the poor start etc - and then start talking about players crossing white lines and that's his hands clean. His contradictions are an embarrassment at times. If he's not careful he's gonna have players not wanting to come out of that treatment room and then we'll be up [Poor language removed] creek this season. I'm afraid to say it but he's petulant.

Petulent?Bloody furious I´d say after coming back fro 2-0 to 2-2 then throwing it away through more bad defending. What do you want him to say?We should have won that game and he knows it .He is trying to get the best out of second string players. We will be a completely different team for the second half of the season he has just got to keep it together till then. And we have got to get behind him and the team.

Their 1st goal came from sustained possession from us. We were knocking it around in nice triangles in the midfield untill Rodders misplaced his pass and they came at us. The 2nd came about the same, lost the ball, conceeded a freekick - goal. If you see the stats we had a lot of possession but didnt do anything with it.

He's trying to say we should be more direct when its needed instead of fannying about. I know hoofball isnt what we should be doing but without a ball carrying midfielder or someone to open teams up at the moment, knocking it around but not moving forward is all we're doing. Bolton just went straight for the kill and got the win.

He's also saying he doesnt know why the players are conceeding from long balls and set-pieces after they've trained to deal with them. So a large chunk of responsibility lies with the players.

Fannying about in possession has't been what's cost us. We certainly could create more chances, but it's all about what we do at the back at the moment - the way we're conceding has been so sloppy!

Maybe Howard does need a break, but certainly the centre backs have also been pretty culpable. Too much space in and around the box, and not marking tightly enough when it comes to crosses. That's the basic football I want to see addressed.

Agree, closing people down, backing off to much.Bad positioning and marking from set pieces. We miss Jags Phil Nevile for that reason. But it´s school boy stuff.

It's not uncharacteristic for us to lose the ball in midfield. We've had this problem even with Arteta and Pieenar on the pitch(we all know who the culprit are). Our defense used to cope well with it and that's where we need to work on.
We'll lose a lot of possesion with hoof and it won't be surprise to see the ball coming back to our area more often than before. It's not the best solution for me.

Whats your suggestion to what should happen then? What will improve the team if Howards dropped?

Work on his reactions? Behave, the guys insanley athletic. And before anyone says he lets too many long distant shots in, just look at any other premiership team, it happens quite regular now to any keeper not just Tim.

Be good if he came to colllect the odd cross or corner though.

He did that several times yesterday. The Howard stick is very unfair. I don't think someone gets the record amount of clean sheets for an Everton keeper if you are no good.

The defense simply hasn't been good enough. I don't think we have had the same back 4 for two games in a row for a while now. At the back were using square pegs for round holes (eg. Hibbert at centre back, left back) That is why we are conceding so many, not because of Howard.
