Hi-Fi systems

Sonos speakers round the gaff, so I can stream any music I want, anywhere I want. That >>>> vinyl.

As there’s undoubtedly a fair amount of overlap between the two crowds, I’ll also double down with “Kindle >>>> books” for the paperback sniffers.
I've just got into streaming after discovering HD streams via qobuz. Absolutely love it.
Songs uses Bluetooth doesn't it? Very limiting if so.

Assume you meant Sonos? Basically, no it uses a proprietary codec over Wi-Fi, although some of their more recent battery / mobile speakers have a Bluetooth mode I believe.
Also newer ones are Airplay2 compatible, but again I believe once the source hits the speaker it’s distributed to paired speakers over their codec / Wi-Fi.
My kit is the older non airplay speakers (exc a Sonos amp which is Airplay compatible and can act as a bridge to any speaker in my system) so you have to link your music streaming service to the Sonos app and select your music through that, rather than say send it from a preferred iPhone app to the speakers over Bluetooth.

Qobuz sounds nice, catalogue isn't as good as Spotify though, sadly.
I've been using it for about 3 months and so far I've only failed to find one album I've looked for. Their catalogue is immense .... and I've discovered the joy of listening to classical pieces from different eras, orchestras and conductors.

I never bothered with Spotify as it was always mp3 quality, though I hear they're planning to up that to flac at long last.

Naim 282 pre amp, Naim 250 DR power amp , Hicap DR, CDX2, XPS DR, Rega P6 TT with Ania MC cartridge and Rega Neo PSU, Trichord Dino , Wilson and Benesch Arcs and Chord Odyssey cabling.
It's a very good system but doesn't come close to the system of @Kev The Rat

Like many other things, the land of diminishing returns. The best speaker/amp etc is the one that sounds best to you and your own opinion of what sounds best will likely change over time, due to physiology.

Demo everything; don't buy aurally blind, even if it's from the same manufacturer.

@LostLegend This pic got no traction yesterday, so I'm trying a re-release. Love a bit of vinyl, rarer the better, there's oceans of the stuff out there, not got a rig anything like as nice as Chris' bespoke stuff.
@chrismpw if I was keen on trying out building some of my own stuff along the lines you have, whats the starting point please?
Starting point ... spend as much as you can on the source- that has to he right. If youre into vinyl, look for something like a dual cs505, rega, linn, roksan, elite rock turntables as you can afford. A decent stylus - can't go too far wrong with ortofon or audio technica.
Next find a decent British made amp - Cambridge Audio, audiolab, mission etc.
Speakers... just go and listen to some British makes and buy what you like after listening to a range of different music. Don't be fooled by speakers that boom out bass or fizz treble- they're quickly tiring and sound unrealistic.

It's decent, I had it for a bit, but there were a lot of gaps for my tastes. Enough that I sacrificed quality for catalogue. Was a year or two ago now though so may have improved..

I mostly listen to records when I actually sit down to listen, to be honest.

Vinyl has always been my go to - however last year my system went through something a revolution after I bought a cd ripper and streamer, then a dac to improve it, then, impressed with the capability a better dac, then a better cd ripper streamer that could do HD then an even better DAC, then an upsampler! It was truly a rabbit hole I fell into.

Even as a diehard vinyl head I have to say (having spent a small fortune) that digital is now very, very close. And since most of my vinyl represents a music taste I had 30-40 years ago I'm a bit sad that it isn't used as often as it should.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but does anyone know anywhere in Liverpool that will repair hifi equipment? I've got a NAD stereo amp I need looking at and richer sounds won't look at it as they don't sell NAD stuff...

We used to have P&A Audio here in Crosby but it shut down years ago...

I can't help with that but I happen to have a NAD c340 for sale if you can't get yours fixed! Only asking £120 vgc 😁

It's my thread so I'm allowing this!! 🤣

Having designed and built my own speakers since the mid 80s, my foray into open baffle dipoles started with these prototypes today.

The bass is lighter than my previous (transmission line) designs, but the realism, lack of boxy colouration and the amazing imagery is really captivating. Might just have to make them properly.

And yes ... I know they look like coffin lids! Shape and dimension is critical to frequency response and this is as far away from coffin lid that I could get with the modeling software!

That looks like a sound system to die for.

Is this like me turning my transistor radio on?

That looks like a sound system to die for.
It's been a passion of me since I had my first transistor radio as a 12 year old and modded it to light up, adding another speaker. Then I boughtca broken cassette recorder from a 2nd hand shop and got it working, traded it back in for a better non working one and so on!

Each time I do something to it, I think "that's it - can't get any better" then something else conmes along and tempts me - like this idea. The speakers I mentioned i built near the start of this thread have been really good for me. I've heard some costing many thousands that I wouldn't swap them for. I thought they'd do for life ... butcthen a week or so ago I remembered I had some drivers to play with and the effing kitchen is all but done so my thumbs were twiddling. Before you know it - boom - new speakers!!
