Horse Racing

I can’t help but think that a lot of racehorses get mistreated in one way or another.

Sad really.

.....there will be the odd case, but I would say that is the absolute exception. The stable staff grow very attached to the horses in their care, you see how devestated they are if they suffer an injury on course. Generally speaking, race horses have a great life.

This. While I personally have no links to the horse racing industry, a good friend of mine married a girl from Lambourne who is well involved in the industry.

From what I've personally seen and from what he's he's told me, the treatment the horses get is in the mainstay absolutely terrific - love and tender care et al.

There'll always be exceptions as unfortunately some people treat humans terribly so wouldn't feel bad about doing the same to a horse but they're not common.

I don’t necessarily mean mistreatment in terms of physical abuse the the hands of their day to day stable staff.

I refer to exploitation and greed.

I recall one of Jonjo’s having a very hard race to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup a few years back. The same horse was then put into the National only 3 weeks later where it suffered a heart attack and died.

Don’t quote Tiger Rolls exploits... he had a relatively easy race a Cheltenham before winning the National yesterday.
There is a marked difference.

....probably half the horses that run at Aintree in the last few days had tough races at Cheltenham. Tiger Roll won easily but it still ran over 4 miles on the gruelling cross-country course at Cheltenham and won a very competitive hurdle race a few weeks before that. Roksana was brilliantly resilient yesterday and won the Mares Hurdle a few weeks ago, Kildisart won yesterday after a tough race at Cheltenham. There are lots of examples.

The trainers will not run a horse without the owners authority. In Ireland they think nothing of running horses twice at the same meeting. Horses will sadly have heart attacks in training or on the course, the nature of racing means there is risk to animal and jockey but the point I make is that the horses welfare is key to those involved.

i thought the way he was slapping tiger roll after he had just finished the race was way over zealous

felt sorry for the horse tbh

Because it's all about the money and the we-care-so-deeply-about-the-horses they spout is pure and utter bull to make viewers feel less guilty about the animal abuse they're literally watching live on television. Horse racing, along with - based on experience from my father over 30 years - dog racing, is utterly brutal.

Eggs....how come Davy gets the mount on Tiger Roll when Jack Kennedy is Gigginstown’s No. 1 retained rider?

....Michael O’Leary definitely calls the tune so it will all be down to him. Russell wasn’t confirmed on TR until recently, I assume O’Leary thinks he has a special bond with the horse.

Interesting interview after the race, O’Leary suggesting the plan is for the Cross-Country and National again next year. The look on Elliott’s face, i’m sure he’d fancy a shot at the Gold Cup such is the horses quality.

I remember a case in the Derby a few years ago involving one of the hot favourites. Can't remember the name. The jockey wasn't happy at all and dismounted a couple of times. This was immediately before the start of the race, and the start was actually delayed by a few minutes IIRC. The trainer and owner came over and you could see that the jockey was advising them to pull the horse out of the race. The ignored him. The horse pulled up sharply during the final run in, and was put down shortly afterwards.

Incredibly sad.

Betfair exchange have a race a day where if your horse goes odds on, in running and doesn't win you get cash back.

Worth an interest if the race is a non handicap.
Today's was a 5f novice stakes and was virtually a risk free bet as the fav looked home and hosed before the off and as soon as the gates opened it went odds on. It dotted in too and trainer Archie Watson is worth keeping an eye on right now as he has his string flying.
