This has probably been explained already, but Kenwright was allowed to get away with bluffing and bullshitting the fanbase for years and years.
Whenever people would try and kick up a fuss about the manner in which the club was being run, they would be told to pipe down by his large army of fawning and sycophantic (this army includes former players of the club, take a bow Graeme Sharp) lickarses. Be careful what you wish for, we aren't kopites, all that sort of bs.
The fans demanded that the local paper (i think this when Roberty Martinez was manager) challenge what's going on within the club, and ask the hard questions etc, but the local kopite rag wrote an open letter to the fans, telling us to be careful what we wish for, don't make things worse, and that eleventh place in the table is our rightful position, that we shouldn't be having unrealistic expectations and aspirations etc.
Contrast that to the way the local paper hounded Tom Hicks and George Gillet out of anfield. There's a few moments where Kenwright should have been driven out of the club, 1 The Kings Dock Fiasco, 2 Failing to sell up or secure funds to help David Moyes take us to the next level, and 3 The appointment of Benitez as manager. Apparently Bill was against this, yet when it happened he wouldn't resign his position from the board in protest.
Basically we've allowed one man to use and abuse this club, to fuel his own ego for way too long. There's all the lies as well, he said Goodison was about to fail it's safety certificate to secure a move to some retail park in Kirkby, and i'll sell up when i can find a buyer for the club. It turns out that Goodison wasn't about to fail it's safety cert, and he was only looking for a buyer who would let him stay on as chairman.
Peoples goodwill and patience has finally broken, there is now deep and long held feelings of resentment that are now strongly coming to the surface. There is now a real desire to demand change and new leadership at the top table, but sadly it's taken impending relegation from the top flight to force the fans into action. Kenwright should have been driven out of the club years ago. He turned what was a giant of the english footballing scene, into an also ran that's just happy enough to make up the numbers year after year.
