Has anyone else noticed that he ends up a mile behind his goal line if he tries to make a save, that and hes terrified of clatter of a post.

Just wondering I seen TH interview on ssn 200 game etc his eyes were strange is he now wearing contact lenses? as the way he went for that bal was so strange he tried to save it by not diving but shuffing along his line as his eyesight let him down as it was a soft goal a regulation save to a tepid placed header to shuffle across frontways on was very strange imo!

The great Joe Royle in his book claimed Goalkeepers with contact lenses in are a big NO NO!

Yes. Howard's attempt there was just crap on so many levels. Would be interested to be a fly on the wall at Finch Farm today as that one gets picked apart

Im begining to think hes afraid of getting a clatter of the post or being blocked or bullied by the opposition players it was the same a couple of weeks back he ended up a mile behind the line after being beaten at his near post, Norwich if my memory is correct. He wont stay on his line when he needs to, chasing players who arent the last man and hes behind it a lot of the time in the last 6 gameweeks when balls are deep in the box. I think hes trying to counter being targeted for physical attention or blocks by the opposition - which other teams have well cottoned on to in terms of his frailties.

He signed Paul Gerrard though so has no room to comment!

Pathetic effort for the Stoke goal.. you can almost accept a keeper can let a shot slip through them or fumble a cross but the complete lack of technique or positional awareness was emabarassing. Always defending him but he is having far too many shocking moments.

Butland to sign in Jan with him going back on loan to B'Ham in the hopes it could bring the price down. Get Gordon in on a free to push or replace Howard till the end of the season, get rid of one of them and Butland becomes number one. Simples.

The dynamic of the league this year is very different then previous seasons. Very few clubs or teams are keeping clean sheet globally in the league. Defenses are more and more pressure then i ever remember and bigger questions are being asked of them more frequently. There is no long grass anymore to hide in and for me Howard has been badly exposed as a result the frailties in his game that were always there are more evident in this context and the direct result is us drawing a hell of a lot of games we should be winning. Now im not putting that solely down to Howard but his ability or lack there of are a big contributing factor to our points total for me. I dont think its form if im honest.

Except for the fact that he faces this type of barrage on his national team - if not worse - and usually comes out with unicorns and rainbows.

His form this year I will give you - you're right. Over history, still a no for me.

EDIT: Neiler, out of sheer curiousity - just asking, not with ulterior purpose, how would you explain the difference in his Everton vs. national team performances? Just wondering.

Compare the attitude and arrogance of Joe Hart to that nervousness and uncertainty of Tim Howard.

It's quite shocking the difference.

I'm not saying Hart is perfect. But he has the attitude of a keeper.

Howard has the attitude of a lost child out shopping with his mum.

I've quickly found some distribution stats dated 9 Oct. It only gives the top 10 and Howard isn't in it.

Al-Habsi 73%
Hart 71%
Schwarzer 67%
De Gea 66%
Guzan 66%
Mannone 61%
Cech 58%
Begovic 57%
Jaaskeleinan 57%
Mignolet 57%

According to EB Howard plays only 29% of our long balls compared to Cech's 59%. He continues "only 1 in 3 of Howard’s long balls finds a team mate (one of the worst ratios in the league).....Howard’s kicking is something which Southall identified as a weakness to the American’s game in his recent interview."

"He dealt with 11% of all high crosses Everton faced last year by claiming or punching. There were 14 other No 1′s below him in this regard. Howard faced less one-on-ones than any other keeper in the league last year". So can we presume that fewer strikers make it as far as seeing the whites of our 'keepers eyes than with other teams and that's why his close distance stats are low?

"This (long shots) is often the greatest criticism you hear about Howard. He often looks leaden-footed or on his heels when shots come in from distance. Comparing the number of goals conceded from shots outside the box to the number of saves made from them, Howard, again more than held his own in the division. There were 13 keepers below him in this regard last season. Howard let in 14% of all shots from outside the box that needed dealing with. There were 9 keepers letting in 20% and more – the worst being Paul Robinson who let in a shocking 35%".

Kudos to posting the facts - they are eye opening (because he is nowhere near as bad as some would make out, very very eye opening stats). I would agree with Neiler that Tim's facing a bigger barrage this season - in particular on the ground - and that's partially what is troubling him. Looks like when you get in the box and are 1 v 1, Tim's not having a good year. Hence, the starfish and the stupid header from this week.

Thanks billycopper, this stuff is great. I'm going to stick to my want of having someone other than Mucha to have as a backup and challenger - open to that, but I stilll don't want to sell him. His stats show that. I'm really hoping he'll turn it around on the ground game and regain his form. As the saying goes, form is temporary, class permanent. Some can argue he doesn't have that permanent stuff, to each his own. Fair enough based on this year.
