It's not so much resting the number 1 keeper but making sure that the number 2 has match practice and remains sharp just in case.

That's how I see it because, as you say, keepers shouldn't really need resting.

This, plus I think it’s so much part of top flight footy these days that it’s actually contractual in the case of some backup keepers.
