I Hate Phil Neville

I can't believe no-one at the BBC told Pearce he was wrong the other night and to have a laugh and a joke about it next time he's on.

He was still going on about it in his next commentary match! He was saying 'oh the other night they made a terrible mistake - they said no goal, then goal...' - I think it was Keown - he just humoured him and said 'I know' and then there was silence for a few seconds.

Executive cowardice, and it runs right through the Beeb (at least) imo, plant a known 'name' rather than do some research and install someone who excels in the field on merit.

I think it's more than that cause they bring in pundits who are ex-players who were terrible, unlikeable and spout rubbish such as robbie savage so it may even be a case of hiring there mates to an extent.

It's all because of Alan "you'll never win anything with kids" Hanson

The media are addicted to ex players rather than good commentating

too many defenders, tough tackling defensive midfields and goal poachers who only are required to know aspects of the game to play their position so have to wing the rest of it not enough creative footballers and intellegent players become pundits. Glen Hoddle is an exception he is just a miserable idiot. I think ex-players will get more views as well though that has to be something of a factor it's just the ex-players they choose the aren't very good and always seem to be very negative.

Another vomit inducing Phil Neville article.

"During my progression through the youth and reserve teams at Manchester United we were taught to deal with one-on-one or two-versus-two at the back.

Because, when you are playing for United and looking to attack all the time, there are going to be times when you have to deal with those situations.

So that was the basis of our defensive coaching at United every day from the ages of 16 to 18 so that, when it came to the big occasion at Old Trafford, we could handle it."

How they were coached at United to "handle the pressure". Not patronising at all

Looks like you took that into commentating Phil.

Just ridiculed on the BBC by Friedel, Linekar and Hansen.

Can't see him getting much media work after the World Cup.

I literally feel dirty now because of the high regard in which I held Neville prior to the Wigan fiasco and his after match comments.

I genuinely though he had bought into Evertonia and became a Blue.

Looks like his long term aim was to use EFC as a stepping stone to get a job on the United staff.

Same here.. the man's an absolute cretin, and as embarrassing it is that I was sucked in, I'm glad he's shown his true colours and cut his ties with us.

Hope Van Gaal sees through him too, and points him in the direction of the exit door.

Phil Neville has come across like a fool this WC. This feller motivated the Everton dressing room? FFS, I wouldn't keep a straight face listening to him. Says it all about Moyes that he'd elevate that uninspiring character to the captaincy.

Imagine us being 1-0 down at half time and he's trying to get the team going.

Christ.

the problem with neville is the fact he cant turn on the auto punditary like the rest of the BBC can. Remembe rhe has an opinion on something but he cant say it becuase it might upset someone, and the BBC cant have that. Perhaps his monotone and boring insight is down to the fact he is trying to be un bias and watch what he says, that and the fact he is probably not an exciting person lol

Look at the difference of Gary Neville on a channel where he can speak his mind and not be penalised for doing so.

Think Phil at the start probably was a great captain. There was a man who knew what success was and was there to kick people up the arse when they didnt perform against teams they should be. He knew how to win and had experienced that so at the start he brought that to a squad under dour moyes. It only changed when he stopped being that role and started being Moyes's assistant in all but name. thats what drove the motivation down in the end.

Neville's been pretty poor, there's no denying that. But has he been as bad as Screamer Pearce, who doesn't understand how goal-line technology works? Nope. As bad as Lawrenson, who plumbed new depths in the USA v Portugal game? Nope. As clueless as Andy Townsend? Nope. As poor a speaker as Rio Ferdinand? Nope. And I simply refuse to believe there's been more complaints about Neville than there has been about Adrian Chiles.

On the plus side Andros Townsend has been ok, which I did not expect. Brad Freidel has been both eloquent and intelligent; Thierry Henry has been witty and observant. Martin O'Neill has been scathing, and backed it up with reasoned argument.

There's been good and bad in the commentary and punditry so far - I would say Neville is sitting in the mid-table table mediocrity section with Alan Shearer.
