no surprise really, phil getting picked for something he isnt good enough at, performs dreadfully and then continues to get picked, the story of his very fortunate life

Come to think of it. Where is David Moyes?

When he was after the United job he was all over the tv like a rash

He's considering doing co commentator work with Jonathan Pearce. On the a...hole scale he knows Pearce is probably the only person on earth ahead of him. Not sure if Moyes has booked a villa in brazil called "casa bellend" but deffo plausible.

I'm not a fan of his (as evidenced by comments here-in), however he's the only 'professional' pundit that i've noticed that's pointed out Gerrard's culpability for the space afforded Italy in that game.

400 complaints ? Surely we could easily lobby the BBC to ditch their KKKopite staff then ???

Perhaps there is a link between the two ;)

There was though. There really was.

No worse than Lawrenson last night - who has been driving people to despair for 2 decades. He gets a 'free pass' and we all know why.

Funny that the Yewtree Channel (BBC) are taking great pains to point out the number of complaints when they have no real reason or right to.

I have a funny feeling that those who 'complained' were pretty much the same ones who mocked Neville's disabled child on 'derby day'.

Very good article in the Telegraph about the decline in value attached to sporting commentaries:

This is a problem in all sports in the US as well. The only non ex-player commentators have been doing it for so long that they are grandfathered in. It's true of pundits as well.

It's a shame, because a great commentator can bring so much to a match, but in the end we (in the US for this world cup) are stuck with second-rate former US players.

I do think that there is value in having one or two ex-players as part of a punditry panel, they can give a view into the mind of a footballer, but it doesn't make sense for commentators, nor should all pundits be ex-players. But there is some sort of fascination with the idea that you cannot know the game without having played it at the highest level.

Mourinho laughs at this fascination.

There is no need whatsoever for 'co-commentators'. I'd argue the only one who provided a decent analysis into the game was Andy Gray. All the others are appalling who repeat what you've just seen but in incredibly monotone voices that actually spoil the enjoyment of a game. The only entertaining bit is where replays show them clearly to be wrong yet they don't admit it even though it's been shown in slo-mo to the world. The commentators themselves are not what they used to be. Can you ever imagine a classic World cup moment being replayed for years with Sam Matterface's voice on compared to a Barry Davies or a Brian Moore. I can't believe no-one at the BBC told Pearce he was wrong the other night and to have a laugh and a joke about it next time he's on.

Executive cowardice, and it runs right through the Beeb (at least) imo, plant a known 'name' rather than do some research and install someone who excels in the field on merit.
