I remember a few months ago, when certain posters were laughing...

Definitely. I'd love it if we could get Pienaar on a permanent in the Summer and try and keep Drenthe, and perhaps push Coleman to RB. Our wing play would be delicious.

Mostly, I agree but not over Coleman. Not seen anything to make me think he's a future right back. The honey badger may have his limitations, but he knows how to defend. Coleman's keen (no pun intended), he has a go and is direct. However, he lacks technique and awareness. His delivery is questionable at best and his decision making is awful. Concerningly, he remains, of the players we own, our only option at right mid. He hasn't really developed since breaking into the first team. I suppose you can't expect too much for 60 k though.

I agree we could. Although with Pienaar back it's improved a bit, so unlikely we'll be playing much good stuff if we stay in the cup. Just making the point that it definitely helps.

As ever, it all depends on results and league position at end of the season.

Which is why I brought up big sam.

Lids shudder at his name, but he got results with effective but terrible football

Boils down to that people aren't bothered with how we play just as long as the end game is "respectable"

I actually agree that he looks a little suspect defensively, but i'd probably adopt a formation like this:

T How
Heitinga Jagielka Distin
Coleman--------------Baines
Drenthe Fellaini Osman Pienaar
Jelavic

It's hard to illustrate it but basically Baines and Coleman would be wing backs.

spoke about wing backs in the pub after the game sat as the way forward

I remember Pompey playing something a few years back like that, and it worked quite well.

Big Sam had Jay Jay Okocha playing for him, we can't compete until we get a 38 year old washup in centre mid for us.

Seriously loved that guy though, so much skill and trickery, I'd pay to watch him alone amongst all that ****e that Bolton served up.

Don't think I could watch us play like Bolton do. With someone creative in the middle, we will get going again.

Said it a couple times now, how come the players are getting away with playing gash? Some of them need to pull finger.

Brendan Rodgers has done one thing which other managers mentioned here weren't able to do it - create a possession based team and used this possession not only as an attacking tool, but also defensive. Spain NT and a few old Brasil NT as well are masters of it, very difficult to achieve and with players he have in his disposal, shows he's a decent manager. Possibly next season teams will find a way to attack them with a better results, but unlike Holloway (whom I rate) and Martinez (not so high on him) he looks like someone who knows how to build a team from the back... and doing it in different way than 10 players behind the ball and hoof from central defenders.
