2022/23 Idrissa Gana Gueye

He had a bad game, midfield was at 6s and 7s last night, Onana started well and ended well, Iwobi was industrious all night but the midfield where not given enough options from the wide men and the full backs.. To be fair Casemiro an Eriksen had quality games and where pretty slick in the middle. They are a good team. Their goals reminded me how they undone Arsenal earlier in the season. Calls comparing us to last season are very premature.

Mark Hughes only played for us once. Not arsed about other clubs.

We've had the following have two stints, of which all bar none had the better stint first time:

Kendall
Dunc
Rooney
Gana (so far)
Unsworth (close call, but first stint was vital cog in successful Cup campaign).
Gravesen
McFadden
Beagrie
Jeffers
Donovan
Jo
Pienaar (close-ish, but most will agree first stint was a tad better).

Doesn't matter. It's still a simplistic sweeping statement. It's akin to the shouts of 'never buy a relegated player', a theory that coincidentally, Gana rips to shreds.

Just because that's historically been the case, is irrelevant. Every deal should be judged on a case by case basis. I'm not a fan of these generalisations.

John Stones would be better if we brought him back now. Bring him back in 4 years, and he probably won't be.

It's not set in stone that if we ever bring a player back, then they won't be as good. It might historically be the case, but that is based on nothing other than timing and the nature of the deals. It's not some unwritten rule that players will defo be worse if they come back for a second spell.

An off day for sure, but let's remember he was up against two of the very best midfielders in the world in Casemiro and Eriksen, and our midfield is very much a work in progress. No real excuses to give up the ball so easily in possession, but it can happen. We were dominated and deservedly lost anyway. I'm sure he'll make up for it.

Summed up well.

As a team we let them play. They have intelligent and technical players who we let play a Ten Hag way...short, 2 touch passes, triangles, late running midfielders into the box. Pulled the midfield apart.

Problem was our ball retention was abysmal. We'd win it back and give it back to them with ease. That's my only criticism of him and the midfield last night.

In retrospect we have to wonder if Gueye has been poor in the last couple of games because more is being asked of him.

Just tell Gueye to screen the back four. That's his job. He's not Pirlo. Dont ask him to distribute like him.

Gueye was being asked to cover a lot of ground while both Iwobi and Onana were moving forward but it seemed Gana was under a lot of pressure due to the lack of discipline by Onana. Maybe that was tactical or just bad luck but Gana was poor last night. Still he can dust himself off and come again. If its a form thing having depth with Davies, Garner and Doucoure is crucial.
