2022/23 Idrissa Gana Gueye

Lots of mitigating factors, no preseason, new midfield still hasn’t gelled together, lots of action lately could use a rest etc. every player has a poor game and so on…

I have a little bit of doubt that he’s going to play to the standard we associate with him. It’s a physically demanding role and he’s older.

Not going to slag him or panic or whatever… just will be looking to see what Garner offers and what managing his minutes with Doucoure and Davies also available might do.

He's 33 years old now, sadly he's never going to be the same player as he was before he left.

Will probably need replaced again next summer to be honest.

I think he is fine. He had a poor game on Sunday but had been good before that.

He is limited on the ball, but honestly he is not the biggest priority currently IMO.

We are grooming Garner to play the role with Onana, with Gueye being phased out gradually.

Had a poor game but that happens to absolutely everyone. I just think we need a bit more rotation in midfield to keep them more fresh and motivated. As I think its highly unlikely we get anything from this one, I think bringing in Garner and Doucoure for a game to spell Gana and Onana would be good.

It’s worrying that he’s miscontrolled simple passes that have led to goals in the past two games. Hopefully he sorts that out.

Lads, he came here rusty, he's played essentially 3 PL games, can we try not to go OTT on every single little thing.

I don't think too many are going OTT. Many of us had concerns about bringing in a 33 year old who's greatest strength is his athleticism and ability to get around the midfield to put tackles/interceptions in. Think he'll do OK this season but is never ever going to be the same player we had prior to moving to PSG.

Which is fine, he cost us peanuts and he's still great. Couple of misplaced passes isn't making me lose my mind like a lot of you in this thread.

Did PSG refuse to let him train with them in the summer?

I believe that he wasn't training with the PSG squad after there was pretty much an agreement. We all know how long that saga seemed to go on for. Probably no training at a decent intensity for 6 weeks or so.

Very strange if that's what happened.

I wasn't convinced pre signing and his recent mishaps totally expected but as someone else said the bar was so low last year, he probably will add something. It won't be a lot but we didn't pay a lot and from the beggars can't be choosers standpoint I guess we just have to put up with his limitations till we get bought out by a totalitarian state and nuke anfield.
