Last night was the only game I have managed to attend all season. Despite being sat in row JJ of the main stand, piss wet through and generally watching a game that seemed at 65% pace it should have been played at.... This lad was worth coming for. He is just involved in everything and does it with a great touch. He is a pleasure to watch and a role model of how the game should be played with 100% commitment. Rom could do with taking note

Lukaku's great and all, but take away the weeks when he was piling on goals for fun against teams at the bottom of the ladder, and how many games did he play against the top teams and have a genuinely positive influence?

Gueye has had great games against Chelsea, Tottenham (home), Man City (away), Man Utd, Arsenal. Liverpool was the only top 6 team he didn't perform against this season.

For mine, he was Everton's player of the season by the length of the English Channel. If he hadn't gone to AFCON and missed essentially 8 games as a result (when you factor in actual games missed as well as getting back up to speed once he was back), he would have finished something like 50 tackles ahead of the next best in the league (Kante).

Absolute hero.

I agree with this. There are some fans who get offended if people criticise Lukaku's work rate and say that because he scores then we should just shut up and accept his lack of effort on occasions. Well if he worked as hard as Gana then who knows how good Lukaku could be. For me with a better work rate he'd be in the World Class category and wouldn't be playing for Everton.

Gueye has been excellent this season and should have been our player of the season. Davies and Schneiderlin alongside him make it one of the best central midfields in the league.

Finishing below Liverpool stings but keeping Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku can reverse that next season, says Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye

Idrissa Gueye believes the 'Ross and Rom' double act can take away the sting of Liverpool finishing above Everton and drive them on to a Champions League challenge next season.

The 27-year-old Senegal international has enjoyed an impressive first campaign on Merseyside after arriving for a bargain £7.1million from Aston Villa last summer.

Defensive midfielder Gueye recorded the most tackles and interceptions per game in Europe's top five leagues in 2016 and was the first across those competitions to win 100 tackles this season.

But one glance at the Premier League table, which shows Liverpool in fourth, three places higher than Everton going into Sunday's final matches, dilutes any satisfaction he feels at his own statistics.

'It stings me a bit — it smarts and hurts. You always want to be higher than your local rivals and we're behind them,' said Gueye.

'It's a separate battle outside of the league positions and it's important to ourselves and the fans. So we want to reverse that next season.'

To do that Everton need to keep their best players. Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a £100m return to Chelsea and manager Ronald Koeman has said Ross Barkley will be sold if he doesn't sign a new £100,000-a-week contract by the end of the season.

Gueye believes if the pair stay it will provide Everton with a huge lift as they look to overhaul their Merseyside rivals for the first time since 2013.

'It's great for the club if guys like that stay. There's no reason to believe they're not going to be with us at pre-season,' he said. 'We're all about growing this club and also improving it.'

Gueye tasted two seasons of Champions League football with Lille after helping the French club win Ligue 1 in 2011.

The midfield anchorman also played six Europa League games for Lille in 2014-15 — group opponents included Everton, who will be competing in Europe for the first time since then.

And he knows what it will take for them to make that next step. 'Certainly the 'big four' have come back to the fore, but it's down to us to believe we can achieve it,' he said.

'We set out to finish fifth and we're going to finish seventh so we're not far away, but we've got to keep progressing to set out that ideal of hitting the top four.'

Idrissa Gana Gueye was speaking at the launch event for Everton and Umbro's new home kit for the 2017/18 season.
