If Silva is sacked - who could/should we get?

Those of us that doubt Arteta's suitability because of age/experience might ponder that Howard Kendall was 39 when we won the first of his managerial titles with us in 1985. And he had already won us the FA Cup as manager in 1984. Admittedly he had previous experience at Blackburn in a lower league but you could argue that being a No.2 to Pep Guardiola is better and more relevant experience to bring to the table in today's world.

Funny you should mention Lee Johnson, but Pep has recently been singing his praises as a future management star.

After the recent managerial disasters some of our fans would never countenance hiring a manager that no one really knew anything.

Someone like him would be onto a hiding to nothing from day one.

As would any manager we appoint, the job is becoming/has become a poisoned chalice

Not that I'd for one second want him back but Allardyce handled it with ease. It's only a poisoned chalice if you see it that way. What makes it what it is at present is an owner who thinks he knows something about football (or who takes advice from someone as badly informed)

It was easy for Allardyce though, he had a very simple remit which to be honest was always going to be easy to meet, and he knew he wasn't going to be here long so he didn't care about building bridges. It is clearly a very very challenging job for anyone wanting to either be here a long time or put themselves in the shop window. It's not impossible obviously, but I don't think it would be a very appealing job in the main.

But it should be straight forward for any manager with enough skill to organise a defense to defend set pieces and to be able to motivate players to put in the required effort to get results at least against the teams outside the top six as a minimum.

The top managers around earn over £10mil per season, Mourinho was on over £20mil per annum for example...Klopp £11.5mil a season etc etc

If you want the very best then you have to pay for it...

One snag, our wage budget is maxed out lol

But like you say, that's a minimum. Allardyce was happy to give us the minimum because he didn't care what we thought about him and he knew he'd be on his way regardless. How long will we accept the minimum for from a new manager though? I'm not defending Silva but if you'd asked in the summer the majority of people would have said yes they would accept being 9th at this stage of the season, the reality is they won't though, hence the current sentiment.

I'm not convinced Eddie Howe would be the answer. It's not like he's had nothing to spend down there and he hasn't really kicked them on after securing them in the Premier League

He showed great foresight to go for a lad like Ake, who I think is a fantastic player, but I'm not sure what he'd do here that Silva hasn't

Ideally we want a manager who will have us playing decent football but will also keep us tight at the back. The most important thing is the squads mentality though. We ultimately need a manager who will get these players performing to their best level, and I don't know who that is

Any manager who comes in is going to be handcuffed by our bloated squad, which probably rules out a Mourinho type because he'd want to spend money and, unless we have a fire-sale, a manager isn't going to be able to add to the wage bill when we have so many players living off the fat of the land like we do now

So we either need a master motivator man manager who will get this current crop of players performing, or a shrewd manager who can get as many of these players off the books as possible whilst investing the meager amounts we get in return appropriately to sign the right players to replace them without breaking the FFP rules

Basically, whoever takes the job from Silva has a huge mountain to assail, and our fan base has shown recently that we're not a particularly patient lot. If Silva does go, the new manager will simply have to hit the ground running and maintain that momentum, otherwise we'll be having the same conversations this time next year

What a mess

Fatty Koeman's and Gormless Walsh's ineptitude has consigned this club to at least another two years of middling mediocrity (or worse), whilst we get our wage:revenue ratio down into less parlous territory.
