The South Pole is covered by the British Antarctic Survey who conduct scientific special operations

1) almost all the maps you see are 2D representations of a 3D oblate spheroid (globe for short)...and the shortest point on a 2D map may be a straight line - But not on a 3D globe

But since you opted not to challenge the presented evidence supporting the existence of a South Pole, I will assume you accept this as fact. That leaves us with an Earth having some sort of strange 2.5 dimensional semi spheroid geometry. Sounds legit.
