This club ? Applying the yardstick of probability i would suggest it is highly unlikely.Do we know whether relegation clauses exist to reduce salaries for the squad? It seems like it should be an absolute default in all professional players contracts but I get the sense our leadership are so arrogant they felt they’d never need them?
I'd say Pickford fresh from a new contract would be worth more than that...We'd probably want to find 150m between sales and wage reductions to right the ship financially.
We probably have the first 15m coming off the wage bill in expiring contracts: Mina, Doucoure, Davies, Townsend. I'd try to retain Begovic and I suspect Coleman would accept a significant wage reduction and stay for another year to try to get us back up and end on some sort of relative high.
Onana and Pickford probably first out the door and maybe in the region of 70m in fees. An extra 10m in wages too. So that's us around the 95m mark to start.
Then it's really just a case of seeing who has interest and trying to move on what high earners we can to make up another 55m or so. Iwobi I think someone would pay 15 for, he gets stick but he's versatile and runs all day and I think a few PL teams would want him. Tarkowski is one player I'd like to keep but I think lower half PL clubs would pay 10m for his experience. The one guy we may have to reluctantly part with is Branthwaite who seems to have plenty of interest, and something in the region of 25 would be hard to turn down. Between those three it could be another 50 in fees and another 10 saved in wages, so that's 155m. If we don't need that much then ideally keep Branthwaite but we might not have the option.
The rest it's probably optional based on who earns what and provides us with value and we'd want to use further sales to fund signings. Attack wise, DCL we have no idea if he will have takers, I suspect he would start the season with us and if he proves his fitness might move in January. I'd want to try to keep Gray and McNeill as I think they'd be very effective at that level and probably don't earn a fortune. Between those two, Simms, Cannon and possibly DCL I think there are plenty of goals at that level.
In terms of defence it's probably hard to shift Holgate, Godfrey or Keane but of course we'd listen to offers. Those three, with Patterson and Myko, probably form the core of a serviceable Championship defence.
Midfield would probably take the most work with Onana, Doucoure, Davies and Iwobi likely leaving, and we'd listen to offers to take Gana's wages off our hands. Gomes is doing well in France and would likely have takers too. So we're looking at the likes of Garner, Warrington, maybe Gbamin if we can't shift. We'd certainly need incomings to sort that out but hopefully we'd at least have some sort of budget from the sales, plus we could make extensive use of loans.
Others might disagree but I do think that after likely sales to balance the books we still have the basics of a decent defence and attack for that level, would require work to craft a midfield though.
Long post. Davies will stay. Be skipper vs Ipswich on opening Friday. We'd probably want to find 150m between sales and wage reductions to right the ship financially.
