I'm puzzled, Gordon. You've just stated in another thread that there are circumstances in which vigilantism is permissible. Which is it? Or are you saying that the police are not allowed to do what private citizens are?

thought you might pick up on that

the police are there to protect society - all of it. They're required to play by the rules that they enforce.

I never said vigilatism was permissable, merely inevitable, perhaps understandable in some circumstances, and that I couldn't guarantee in that particular case that I personally would be above it. At no point did I say it was right :)

So we agree, Gordon.

It was just because you pointed out that "regardless of what he'd done, [the police] were out of order".

My point is that the police, like us private citizens, are bound to follow the law.

But apart from the coldest fish, everyone can imagine circumstances when it is understandable (perhaps even right) that citizens, and even the police, take justice into their own hands. But in saying that, we can never officially condone such behaviour for obvious reasons.

undoubtedly, but in my opinion, I don't think their actions were understandable or right

one time this looney came into the supermarket where I was working, he was threatening people with a syringe, and it looked used had some kind of liquid in the cylinder bit.

An off duty policeman happened to be in the store (thank [Poor language removed]!) and took the man down, all while holding his hand and telling him to let go of it, when the guy let it go he tried to escape, and so the policeman told him not to move, but still he struggled, so the policeman slammed his head into the floor, the guy didnt resist anymore after that.

the police meet all kinds of horrible people, and I for one was very happy that the policeman did what he did on that night otherwise I have no idea what would have happened.

As for this guy, its quite simple, you don't piss the police off, as someone else said the firemen and paramedics actually get attacked while they are trying to save lives, this is utter madness and a shame upon everyone in the country imo.

In Japan, anybody involved in these trades are treated with the upmost respect and like heroes.

Gordon, i agree if stood up and you have head control keep the head close to your body (in your power box) this way you can move the head (+body) with your own bodyweight instead of relying on arm strength and giving him space to get free.
But if you have his head pinned to the floor this isn't important as long as you have your bodyweight on his head/neck.:D
