Is Messi the greatest player ever?

He rolled around so what most of them do, Barca are still awesome minus messi though. I'm not ****ging messi off he's fecking amazing but until he proves otherwise on the international stage he's not as good as Maradona in my opinion.

Also when was rolling on the floor after a foul an indicator of a players talent?

Why?? the champions league now days is just as good a standard as playing in world cups, there's hundreds of " world class " players who haven't done a tap at international level, a certain big nose smackhead from across the park was probably the best striker I've ever seen when he was in his prime, never done a thing for England, I don't buy that at all, judging Messi against Maradona, Messi has everything he had only more, 5" taller , quicker , stronger , and when he gets kicked all over the pitch he doesn't roll around like he's been shot like that little cheating [Poor language removed], and add to that he's 24 years of age, what will we be saying about Messi when he's 34 FFS, he's not even in his prime yet

Maradona was tearing the world a new one at 17 and still at it in his 30's. Yet again because you obviously are cherry picking certain points, Maradona played in average teams and took the to glory, messi plays with a hell of a lot of world class players in his team but he is still the main man, however his job is easier when you see who he is playing alongside. At international level he has tevez, aguerro etc and he isn't the same player as he is for barca thats FACT dude. If Messi can start performing at international level like he does for the best club side in the world then maybe he can eclipse maradona.

thats an extremely weak argument dude, maradona was a great player he may have cheated with the hand of god but did you see the other goal from the same game? Cocoaine is not a performance enhancer so taking recreational drugs doesn't really count as cheating for me.Like I said Maradona took average teams and made them special, Messi plays in a special team with a lot of special players.

He was actually banned for using Ephedrine in 94. So yes, he was a cheat.

But unless you can provide me with a FACT that International football nowadays is better than the champions league then it's just mine and your opinion, there's no facts involved, like I said there have been many many players in the past who are undoubted world class players who done **** all at international level, I always thought Fowler was a far better player than Michael Owen when in his prime, but the international stage would tell you otherwise, but yes I do firmly believe Messi will win the world cup one day with Argentina as well as numerous more champions league and Ballon D'r awards

I don't doubt that he will mate but he hasn't yet has he, the greats all did

I don't get the Napoli were average line. The two seasons before he joined they finished 9th and 11th. His 1st season they were 10th. The 1st title they won it was their defence that won it for them. Juventus scored more goals than Napoli, but Napoli had a much better defence. Can't imagine Maradonna did much to help the defence. Maybe signing Italian internationals like Ciro Ferrera and Salvatore Bagni did though. Add in that they had the likes of Alameao, Careca and di Napoli in their attack and it was hardly the rubbish side they made out to be.

When they next won the league, both Baggio and van Basten scored more goals than Maradonna. His record in Europe is also poor, with Napoli never really impressing, despite the absence of English teams post Heysel and it was Milan that dominated Europe around that time. In 25 European games for Napoli he scored just 5 goals. Messi in contrast has 49 in 65 European games, with a stunning 12 in 7 this season!

Messi also has a comparable goals per game ratio at international level, despite never hitting his Barca form for Argentina. A lot of all this seems to reflect the reminiscence bump, which suggests that whoever is at their peak during our adolescence is thereafter regarded as the best ever. That and of course that during that time Maradonna hit his peak against England so he's at the forefront of our national consciousness.

My Grandad who has seen all the best 'Pele,Maradona,Beckenbauer,Cryuff.....' has said numerous times that Messi is the best ever. He is well better than Ronaldo and all them that say 'Could he do it on a cold night in Wigan?' Simple answer, Yes.

I can't stand it when people use that argument. Never mind scoring in the Champions league final at Wembley or scoring more goals than games he's played....he could never hack it at the DW against the worst defence in the league.

Exactly. There is no situation that could arise in football where Victor Moses is better equipped to deal with it than Lionel Messi.

Just watched ITV4's 'Lionel Messi: World's Greatest Player'.

Arsene Wenger thinks so, and who would argue with one of the best managers in the world who's seen them all?
