Is this the season when Shane Duffy breaks through?

Seems like a nice enough lad and has the heart to succeed. That injury he sustained was horrific.

He just doesn't strike me as a composed ball-player that we seem to be striving for these days. He IS good in the air but his head must be like a 50p because whilst his clearances do go far, you are just never sure in which direction.

Put it this way, I trust Alcaraz in the team more than Duffy.

As pointed out above, he belongs to another era....or a more 'agricultural' style manager.
I dunno, watching the full game against Tranmere the other day - he looked good passing. Not amazing, mind, but good, I do believe he's improved at least a bit.

And if anything - Jags also "learned how to pass" rather late in his career, didn't he? Duffy's 22, he has plenty of time to learn his trade a bit better. I believe he will get chances this season, and remain hopeful that he takes them and performs as we all want him to...

he would be a boss championship centre half. Not good enough for premiership standard but he could easily be a good premiership centre half if he takes a step back and learns his trade. Wouldnt trust him now as a first choice centre half. Comparing him to stones is just daft as he looks a 1 in a million prospect

I've decided that I will not judge anything that happened in the Moyes ere in terms of young players breaking through. Mustafi just won the world cup FFS, and didnt even get a sniff under Moyes. Rodwell was mis-managed, Barkley bombed after one mistake and there is probably more. He didn't break through 3 seasons ago. He played a few games because of injuries, did well and was then dropped
decide whatever you like.

He broke through 3 seasons ago.

Martinez worked with him last summer. Sent him out on loan and kept Stones ahead of him.

And not a Moyes in sight.

Based on my very limited view of him, he's a bit slow and not good enough on the ball, especially for a Martinez team. Happy to be proved wrong.

Here's hoping he does develop......but that will mean another loan to play week in, week out.

Would he want to sign a contract knowing he may not make the grade again next summer?

I think it's best for all if he just moves on.

My view is also limited but he does remind me more of the old fashioned type of CB. Saying that Jags and Distin were basically dogs of war defenders before Martinez came and they were also awful on the ball. Jags improved a bit on the ball but Distin didn't. Who knows and who has seen enough of him to pass the judgement.
With regards to the poster saying there wasn't a Moyes in sight when Martinez kept Stones and sent Duffy on loan...you have to consider the fact that Martinez knew a lot more about Stones than he did about Duffy. He almost signed him until Moyes gazumped him in the last minute.

In a nutshell I can't say he will make it but the little I did see of him I like.

Reckon he might get a few games between carling cup and some europa games early on :-) Depending on other factors, maybe a couple of premiership matchestoo! he did ok when got put into team by Moyes when injuries happened and his still only 22 !

Lets be honest the fact his still a professional footballer after the injury he had says a lot about the guy!

he'll be back up in the main and there's no point sending him out on loan if we're not getting him signed up again!

Sensible assessment Luimneach. I have great hopes for him this season.

An bhfuil tu ag dul chuig Durlas amárach?? Na Dubs abu !!! ;)

Really want this lad to come good. He's solid. Not the fastest but he's strong. Not sure how good he is on the ball but if he fits Roberto's system I'm sure he'll get games.
