Jade Goody dies

jade was ignorant at times, but she was certainly no racist. Plus she apologised sincerly, so she didn 't deserve the ridicule she got afterwards and shilpa forgave her.

It was said on Big Brother.

Never heard about it all over the news??? Strange how the media focused so much on Jades comment in relation to others.

Spot on. It was said by Jermaine Jackson to ShilpaShetty in the bedroom. He told Shetty to take no notice of "The White Trash". Strangely, on the catch up show later that evening, channel 4 decided to cut out the footage of his conversation yet Goody recieves all this abuse and she is not even had her funeral yet. No doubt someone will mock that too.

so not said in any context to the individual or individuals he was referring to. im starting to build a picture of the two incidents now. shilpa poppadum to her face. white trash to nobody specifically. hmmm.

Depends how you term racism. You'll find most definitions resolve around "discrimination", not merely drawing attention to someones race. Thats what people tend to forget.

Yeah, the example you gave probably doesn't strictly fall within the definitions of racism, there's probably another description for it.

It makes an issue of of race though so if anything is very very minor racism but certainly not harmful as long as its not part of that guys overall views.

"White trash" is bordering on abuse though, it certainly carries negative connotations. But maybe thats were the minority thing you mentioned comes into play.

got the impression you were playing coy, as the above post seems a bit strong for someone that doesnt know fully what was said to whom and how and when. such is the amount of what is lost through the medium of type where so much of an actual conversation is lost.

So your suggesting it only matters if the individual actually hears the alleged racist quote?

White trash was aimed at Goody's mother. What does White Trash mean? If i called a Black Man or the Black Race for instance Black Trash, would i be racist? If there was music awards solely for the White origin, would that be racist? I am confused!

hmm. Dont fully understand.

My point was, racism to me depends upon the context and "white trash" carries negative connotations - in any context - if that makes sense.

how much crime can there be without a victim? lets look at what has been made out so far about how things were said and to whom. then consider what is said behind closed doors just two people talking. (and for the record jackson knows about brutal racism (not excusing 'white trash'))

The White trash remark wasn't racist per se and I'll explain why.

In referring to a group of 'White Trash' Jackson was referring to a particular demographic, the ill-educated and ignorant lower class that are often referred to in the States as trailer trash.

It wasn't a case of all white people are trash -a wide sweeping generalisation in the way that Jade's clique (these cliques get everywhere) suggested that all Indian people look the way they do because they don't wash their hands or cook their food properly.

It was simply, don't listen to them, they're ignorant, ill-informed and ill-educated, with the emphasis on wilfull ignorance. It would have been better if he'd used the term trailer trash... but then nobody picks their words perfectly all the time.

On the other note, it's sad that Jade's dead, it's sad when anyone (well, ok most people) dies young. It's a shame for the boys, fortunately their real dad, who has custody, seems to have his head screwed on, but that doesn't mean they won't miss their Mum.

However, this doesn't mean, just because she's dead, that everyone is obliged to change their opinion of who she was when she was alive. I didn't have a major problem with her, I wasn't a fan in any way shape or form, and I thought she typified a lot of what is wrong with society, but there you go.

While the raised profile of the need for proper screening has to be welcomed, let's be under no illusion that this was an unplanned bonus - the girl herself openly admitted that she was going for the publicity to earn as much cash as she could while she could (and partly I suspect because it was all she knew - she knew no other way to react).

What I find difficult to stomache is the sanctification of the girl; the thought that, just because something tragic happened to her, all of a sudden, she was some wonderful person - she wasn't, she was the same ignorant, mediocre, self serving D-Lister she'd always been, she just happened to be tragically ill.

Mediocre, shallow, irritating people die in tragic circumstance some times, it's a real shame, but it doesn't change who they were, and it shouldn't change our opinions of them, and we certainly shouldn't have new opinions foisted upon us by those who think they have the moral high ground because they can be fickle in sad times. Perhaps, the real moral high ground (if such a thing exists) belongs to those who have the integrity to maintain their views and opinions in the face of all of the hyperbole, group hysteria and peer pressure that situations like this kick up.
