I was at the Peterborough v Newcastle game when Justin Fashanu played. The abuse he suffered that night was appalling. Our kids were 11 and 9 at the time and we were sitting in the family stand, the comments coming from parents there with their children were unbelievable. I was so angry I complained to the steward to be met with a shrug and “well what do you expect”. I wish Jake all the best and applaud him for his courage and hope people can focus on his football not his sexuality.

Sounds awful. Imagine being so angry and consumed by hatred of someone just for having different colour skin.

I'd like to say times have changed but we seem to be heading backwards as a society unfortunately.

I hope he makes it to the very top

Fair play to you Jake, and if anyone has a problem then they can get stuffed in my opinion.

We've had openly gay rugby players, and here in Ireland we've had openly gay hurling players, and now we have an openly gay football player.

The poor lad is going to get abuse from some rival players, and some rival fans as well, but all we can do is hope that the authorities appropriately deal with that.

Not sure about rival players, I think most clubs/captains will make it known anyone abusing him will be in for a hefty fine. Fans are different matter.

Yeah what fans do and say is way harder to control. I'm sure most players, will treat Jake no different to anyone else as it should be.

Hopefully he won't be alone fir long and other pros will follow suit.
This really.

I hope it gives others the courage to come out as well.
It's such a strange thing that in any other walk of life, coming out is barely even glossed over these days, but football is so far behind the times.

It's a shame really as Football is such a global sport.
