2022/23 James Garner

Gives us options if Garner can do a job at right back, particularly as it allows Patterson to get forward more. Kind of like the hybrid midfield role that Stones has now at city, Garner can slot in when required. We could do with the same versatility on the left to give us more balance.

You only have to see the difference Robertson and Alexander Arnold made to the rs. They elevated a decent team with a boss front line into a title winning side.

Right after securing a forward we have to have those FB positions sorted. They are a massive weakeness for us. Coleman turns the clock back with less than 50% of his performances now and Mykolenko is at best a reasonable defender.

Now if Garner is used as a RB we have half the problem solved; then we need to go out and bring a LB in because there's no one better than Mykolenko in that position.

No manager worth his salt would seek to convert a talented midfielder into a full back. The influence and importance from midfield is greater than it is from full back and far harder to source in the transfer market.
This simply is not true.

Did you think Baines was less influential on Everton's performances than Gravesen, for example?

In 05 everything went through gravesen in a way it couldn't through a full back.

Baines was a unique footballer, probably the best LB in the world for a period. Generally speaking center mids have a higher value and that is because its a more difficult position with a rarer skillset.

Garner has never even played RB from the start for us, he will not be getting converted to one.

You dont believe that.

It's a probelm position for us and Garner plays it for England U21s and he's played it for Everton...and he's also just stated he knows he can do that job and is willing to do it.

You just cant demote the role of FB in today's game. Just about any team that wants to get wins form games rely on their FBs getting forward and providing quality balls into the box.

He didn't play it for Everton.

He played RWB but in that game B'mouth were pressing us and he eventually ended up as a RB.

Do you really think this isn't being seen by a cash strapped club as a realistic option to solve our RB situation?

He played the full game versus Bournemouth in the game that kept us up, hardly put a foot wrong throughout the game and was possibly the calmest player in the side that afternoon, I’d prefer him as a central midfielder but he certainly looked like a good full back in that one game on a very emotional and tension filled day.

So he played wing back, not right back. It's a very different concept when you have 3 cbs. As I said he hasn't played right back for us.

He may be seen as last gasp cover, I doubt he is being seen as first choice option. He won't be converted there long term unless he's not good enough at cm.

Played wing back

He was prevented from that move by the manager...who he never forgave.

Yes Dave I'm sure you have proof of this..not. But as I'm sure you will agree, if a player wants to go badly enough they usually win, contract or no contract. Baines stayed loyal to the end, now on the coaching staff, but of course, you and you're twisted logic know better.
