2023/24 James Garner

If we have pace we can knock a ball over the top to run on to, we don’t, so we go long to pick up second balls
We didn't exclusively play hoofball at the start of the season, including during our first run of good form, and we did fine. We resorted to type during and after our bad run. The squad is capable of playing different ways, anyone saying anything else is being disingenuous.

We have been like this for about ten years though. I think we could be much better of the striker (whoever it is) stays central as opposed to drifting wide.
Agreed. I would also point out that we have had various managers and a revolving door of players in that time. Our problem isn't the manager OR the players, it's the culture at the club and both the management and the players. Someone, I guess the DoF if that is the model we are going with, needs to have an actual long-term plan and stick to it rather than panicking every time it hits a bump.

We would be above all those teams if we had our full points total.

Depends what you want really. I'm more than happy to play direct football but it has to be done with purpose rather than aimlessly hitting it up the field.
That game against Sheffield United was as bad a match as I've seen. Yes, we've got the points, and for many that is the sum of their desires, but good god that was poison for the eyes. Other than the derby, I don't think I've enjoyed an Everton match all season. It's a lot of money for misery. Supporting your team is supposed to be fun.

I never said the squad was League 1 standard nor anyone is performing miracles so i dunno what thats supposed to mean. Anyway its the Garner thread and ive maybe steered it off course slightly so i will leave it there.
I'm talking about Garner, you said he looked average, I simply stated that any midfielder would look average when they spend most of the match watching the ball soar over their heads. Imagine Messi in this side, challenging for headers and 50:50 second balls.

Is it?

We struggle because we are not good. (Obviously)
It is, but the last five years have been really rough. I don't mind that we're not winning the league, obviously I'd prefer it if we had a chance of winning something but it's not the be all and end all, but I would like to enjoy going to the game/watching the match on telly at least now and again. Is that really too much to ask?!

Yeah, think we got found out once teams worked out we didn’t have much threat

Bit silly really that. Messi couldve played in wimbledons "crazy gang" and looked world class and i severely doubt many balls would be played over his head in any side never mind ours. We dont have a Messi or anyone who could lace his boots so bit of a daft statement that mate.

I'm sure that you are deliberately missing my point so that you can make condescending and pithy remarks. Clearly my point is that if you never get the ball to feet it's difficult to show any quality as a midfielder. You already know this, however, but would rather just say "it's the players". Fair enough, that's up to you.

Garner's a good player. He didn't get found out, we just don't utilise him. It is what it is. It'll be more of the same next season and we'll constantly be told it's just the players, they're not good enough, like we've been told for the past 10 years despite not having any of the same players that we had 10 years ago (except for Coleman, who'll be here forever).
It's not just the players, they're part of the problem they're just not as bad as half this forum would have us believe. It's the players, the coaching and the whole culture of the club. I'm guessing you're just going to reply by saying it's the players, however, so maybe I'll leave it here.

The Dychettes keep blaming the players.

Im curious, how many teams in the bottom half have a GK "worth" 40m, a CB "worth" 80m, a midfielder "worth" 60m and a Striker "worth" 60m.

Palace have a few assets in that bracket, im not sure any of the other teams do.

Yep, look at any players thread with the possible exception of Branthwaite. Every single one is full of people saying that player X, Y or Z is rubbish and getting anything out of them is some sort of miraculous achievement. The Onana thread is my favourite, links to Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal but he's lazy, can't pass, and is generally useless.

Not saying garner got found out. Think the team got found out. Not enough pace in attack so teams stopped worrying about the counter attack.
Went on the bad run, then returned less pleasing on the eye football, direct football, and winning second balls.
Agree garners a good player

Now let's not go saying anything we can't take back.

Beating chelsea and newcastle was a bit of alright. This season has been painful, again, but we're in a state of flux, I pointed out the madness in the squad thread earlier. And it's gonna get even more mad in about two weeks time. 18 outs, 5 ins inc 2 loans. This summer see's more of the same.
It's a skeleton crew for next season (apt for the Mary Celeste) and hope the cut backs allow some financial breathing room to try to rebuild thereafter.
We all have to pray and sacrifice and do rain dances and whatever else that the miniscule squad all stay fit and well and injury free next season or it's big big trouble in little Everton FC.
