James McCarthy

Glen Whelan played on his own in front of the back 4 with Macca and Quinn further forward. You could see that he wasn't quite used to it as he didn't see as much of the ball, but if he hadn't played there he would not have been in the position he was to slip it through to McGeady for the first goal. Although it looked a bit disjointed at times it was a good tactic by O'Neill as it stopped the opposition coming out. May work better against the Germans.
funnily enough, he always used to 'play in the hole' for Hamilton with some success (lesser league and all I know), with his move to Wigan, and then to us, Bobby has been moving him further back down the pitch in a more negative/defensive role. It's going to take more than one or two games for the Republic to get him up to speed playing further forward again.

...played a slightly different type of role for me. The lads alongside were the workhorses (and put in a terrific shift). I've not seen him as high up the pitch for us, have a look at the number of crosses coming in where he was actually in the box. I reckon O'Neil sees him more as the playmaker and he certainly has that dimension to his game.
I wonder how much that had to do with his rumoured problems with blisters.

.....good point, it could possibly explain why his role was less energetic. Also, he did come off near the end.
Yeah, basically as soon as Aiden scored the goal and he was rested for the friendly (although so was Coleman tbf)

Bit worried about James, just doesn't seem to be as energetic as usual which in turn is putting pressure on our defenders. Hopefully it is just down to a poor preseason.

I see the star are angling towards McCarthy moving away from us

"Everton risk losing Scotland midfielder James McCarthy as they stall over talks about a new deal."

If he signed a 4 year contract last year he still has 3 years left on his deal. Hardly into the last 12 months of his contract. More rubbish to fill column inches in the newspapers. Does look as though he needs a rest though, but doubt it will be against Wolfsburg.

I think that without Barkley, we haven't got a central player who comfortably brings players/the ball/distribute from deep in our half to the final third. As a consequence Barry and McCarthy have felt the need to try and fill that gap. I saw that with Barry against Chelsea, trying to ping balls around and McCarthy seeming a bit more agitated and less free. They both don't seem as comfortable positionally.

Thoughts?

For me McCarthy makes too many backward passes, if he could improve his attacking thinking a bit more he would be a lot better.

mate, it's the star. they published a story on thursday saying the biggest thing Pistorius had to worry about was getting bummed in jail.

"When you've had black, you don't go back"

I too would be worried if I were OP.

As for McCarthy, I think Roberto has proved that long term & better contracts are there to be had. No problems that I can see
