Perhaps not although I think you underestimate his influence on the team, especially off field. But as you say it is unlikely he will be here for many more years so there will be an opportunity for someone to show that they have the character needed. Personally I think it might be Stones, despite his age, rather than either Ross or James. He is already showing quite a few leadership traits and he is much more comfortable with the media duties.Jagielka will never go down as a captain of note, IMO. You either have the gravitas for that role or you dont. He doesn't.
He'll be gone soon enough. McCarthy, because he's young, will be around for a long time but also very experienced now would be a decent candidate to succeed him.

That's a thing even Rooney can do at a pinch and it's not crucial.
Stones doesn't have the credibility for captain and wont for a long time. No other player is going to look to a 19/20 year old for leadership.
McCarthy has the presence, surely? He's quite a bit older and experienced than Stones. That's why it wouldn't go to either of them in the immediate future...Baines or Barry, in that case.
They will if he a natural leader, if he isn't he won't make captain. Anyway Jags will proabably still be with us for at another two years and absent a horrendous period of form plus attitude problems he will retain the captain's armband. That's a thing even Rooney can do at a pinch and it's not crucial.

Personally I am very happy about it, especially if he can continue to play like he did against Lille, was a superb performance and his past several games have been great. Not quite sure why you are chosing now, of all times, to get on his back and want him stripped of the captaincy.
Agree, for all his charming smiles Martinez has quite a bit of steel and he's mentioned a few times the team need to be a bit more streetwise. Players like Barry and Eto'o help, not nasty but forceful at putting our point of view across., is it just me, or are we wising up about being a little more vocal when decisions go against us under Martinez ? A few times this season I've seen a few of our lads complaining about things, which wouldn't have happened a couple of seasons ago. This is a good thing btw, we're not going over the top about it, just letting the ref know we think he's got it wrong, and maybe putting a bit of doubt in his mind.
