James McCarthy

LOL...needs to do more.
I don't think that anyone is questioning his work rate or effort. It's more about his (limited) role or contribution.
Clearly he is doing a good job as DM but it would be good to see him trying to be more positive and assertive in the game.
Something like Roy Keane without the OTT aggro. In fact, RK has actually made this very point (that he needs to start asserting himself more), so it would seem to be as such about the player himself as about RM's role for him.

Hes a defensive midfielder mate.

In the same way that Matic is, who also only has 1 league goal all season.

What does Barry do then? Why are we conceding so many goals then if McCarthy is our DM? My quibbles with him remain that he doesn't find forward passes and is often out of position hence why you see him tearing round. I know he's still relatively young but he's got to start kicking on.

Ireland midfielder james McCarthy is a vastly-overrated footballer, according to RTÉ pundit Eamon Dunphy.

The Everton man started alongside Glenn Whelan with Wes Hoolahan supporting lone striker Robbie Keane in last night’s 1-1 Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Poland.

And while Dunphy was full of praise for Hoolahan, he slated the ability of McCarthy and Whelan before claiming that Hull City’s Stephen Quinnshould have been in the team.

“Whelan can’t play at all,” Dunphy said on 2FM Game On tonight. ”He doesn’t tackle, he doesn’t get on the ball, he can’t run and I don’t know why he is playing for Stoke or Ireland.

“McCarthy is turning out to be a terrible flop. He doesn’t do anything. He could be a holding player perhaps doing what Whelan is supposed to be doing. I don’t agree that he is a different player for Everton, I just think he has better players around him.

“But still doesn’t really move the ball forward and he never changes the tempo of the game, which is the key.

He is overrated. Jamie Carragher said last week that if there was one player he could take for Liverpool it would be McCarthy. He said the only thing missing from his game is goals. That is nonsense.
“He is a hyped player and everyone thinks he is far better than he is. We’ve haven’t got time to waste with Whelan and McCarthy.

“We have Stephen Quinn, who is a good, young, busy player who is always looking to do something in the game. He should have started last night.”

A 20 year old, a 21 year old and a 23 year old are arguably the 3 most important players of a prem team and people say they need to start kicking on.

Good times.

So you're happy with them remaining at the standard they have been this season? You can cut it any way you want McCarthy and Barkley considering their ability just haven't performed. James isn't even that young any more. Needs to do more for me. The Duphny fella is talking rubbish but in amongst it there's some uncomfortable truths about forward passing and being unable to set the tempo, nearly any game this season is an example of that.

Who is Eamon Dunphy?

He's like me 3 years ago.

He's a regular pundit for RTE's football coverage, and possibly our most famous. He's made a career out of saying controversial things, and was probably the last man to admit that Cristiano Ronaldo is a good player after years of calling him an overrated showpony.
