make deulofeu the No10 and that's a decent side. I guess it all depends without knowing who will be bought or sold.
had edited that in before you replied :-)

will be all about energy and workrate in the centre, would be very difficult to pass through us with that team, opposition would have to resort to FatSamBall which Stones and Jags should mop up.

rom doesnt like the wing. Im not sure. Too early in the window.

You said people give McCarthy a free pass because he runs about a lot and tackles. I was merely pointing out this was his actual job in the side. When Ross sets up/scores the number of goals that one would expect of a player getting that many minutes in his position then he will get a 'free pass' because he's doing his job as well.

my point was that MCarthy has been good enough to play Play first team Premiership football since the age of 17/18, McCarthy is way ahead in terms of development to the point he was bought to set Bobby's rhythm/tempo/playing style for the rest of the Club.

I saw McCarthy make his debut for Hamilton at 15. I also saw him play for two years in the Hamilton First team as an AM and number 10. Bobby bought him for Wigan and after a few positions, moved him back into the role we see him in now, not because that was his best position, but because that was where he's the most effective in the team given the Players he had/has in the squad. Hell, thinking of it, I've probably seen McCarthy play in more positions than Bobby as. (he played up front when called upon for an odd game at Hamilton). Yes it was Hamilton, playing in the lower Scottish Leagues then the SPL, but then again he was only 15/16/17 playing against the biggest nastiest defences Scotland had to offer.

All I'm saying is, you'd be surpised what McCarthy can do. All we've seen so far of him in an Everton shirt is him under orders to defend and cover for other players getting forward. Towards the end of last season, Bobby started telling him to get forward a bit more as well because we were predictable and ponderous. He did and managed to get a couple of goals, I really don't see what the problem is. McCarthy will make a great box to box midfielder.

in a couple of seasons I'd expect Besic to be anchoring our midfield and McCarthy and Cleverley both aiming for double figures of goals playing with more licence to attack.
Obviously your a big fan as you have been watching him since he was 15, which is fair enough

I haven't seen anything in 2yrs to say he will become an outstanding box to box midfielder

He also got slated by some of the Irish media for his performance against Scotland, basically they where asking the question what does he do?

And to be fair playing number 10 for Hamilton in the Scottish league
Is slightly different from playing midfield in the premiership

I do get your point, but he's just playing how he's told to play.
He did win the PFA Young Scottish Player of the Year in his only year of SPL football, at the age of 17/18 effectively playing as a number 10. Naismith surprising won that a couple of years earlier in his early 20 (playing in his usual AM/F role) which should give you some indication of the level. A younger, playing 'out of position' at no10 McCarthy was as good if not better than Naismith in his proper position. Still not the greatest of levels to be at but certainly not the worst, but then again nobody is suggesting McCarthy would ever be anywhere near playing as a no10 for us, but he does have the skills to do it there at a lower level.

My point is basically I don't rate him as much as you

IMHO there are hundreds of players that can do what McCarthy does

barring us getting this No10 that's exactly how i think we'll line up but play a diamond in the hard games with both besic and Barry and since they're all at the start I think besic might keep his place. It's definitely the season Besic will take barry's pos. Just a matter when. If we get that no10 McCarthy will be sold.

No he won't. McCarthy is absolutely key to this team. And there's been no inclination at all that he will be sold to draft a N0.10 in.

I'm not sure. Why hadn't he been given a new contract?

the stats certainly back you up and I thought he was our 2nd best player last season but I can't get over the fact I think long term he plays in Barkley's position.

plus if a no10 is bought either Del, Barkley or Cleverly will need to be dropped.

we'll soon see I suppose. I'm not sure what I want. I just know I want Deulofeu, Rom and Barkley playing in their best positions and the team built to get the best out of them.

McCarthy got stick off Eamonn Dunphy after the Ireland v Scotland game. This is the bloke that doesnt think Ronaldo is a great player- wouldnt listen to him about football matters. He is not as effective with Ireland because he is trying to play both Central midfield positions.

Glen Whelan could quite possibly be the worst professional footballer I have ever seen so it must be tough playing with him.

He's the first name on the team sheet when fit mate. Cleverley has been brought in to play on the left at first I feel, and act as back up for all of the midfield positions. Barry and Besic will probably battle it out for that holding position, with Gibbo pretty much permanently crocked.

Barks will stay playing in the No.10 role for the majority of games - he may get moved deeper in times though I think that will then see us switch to a 4-1-4-1 formation. But none of that means McCarthy is to be sold.

He's got 3 years left on his current deal has he not? He will be offered a new deal - he should have been offered one sooner, but that doesn't mean that we are going to flog him. We'd never get enough money for him that would match his value to our team.
