How long before Gueye is deemed not good enough on here by the way? Since most people seem to be in agreement that McCarthy was good for the vast majority of his first season at the club, even being seen as one of our best players in that time? Gueye's played 3 games for Everton and it's been decided he's the new Kante/Makelele, despite people on here criticising the signing when it happened due to him coming from a Championship club.

Hope Gueye also puts his defensive midfield duties to one side as well so that he can go and grab the 7-8 goals a season required of someone in that position as that's something that McCarthy can't do. Just had a look and Gueye got 0 goals in his 35 appearances last season so a bit concerned there it has to be said. He also got 5 goals in 5 years in the French League. Bit surprising that he's a year older than McCarthy too so youth certainly isn't on his side...

It's quite easy to make a player who is actually talented seem poor when you focus on things like that though isn't it.

Gueyes far superior defensively and is a much better passer, actually passes forward. No ones expecting goals from them, but do expect some positive play when in possession and not useless sideways or backwards 5 yard passing

an absolutely brilliant assessment mate. McCarthy has had discusting abuse with people even mentioning religion when we should be talking about performance on the pitch only.

And you've decided this after watching Gueye play 3 games? This is my point, McCarthy was excellent in his first season so the same claims that are being made about Gueye now were probably being made about McCarthy back then as well. And loads on here do expect him to score several goals a season, even though there are very few defensive midfielders, if any, that actually get more than 1-3 a season.

Look at @Joey66 post here about the "goal" a season target:

"Ah well lads when he recovers from his groin injury we have that great sidewards and backwards passing to look forwards to nd the goal a season target he keeps up with - look in his first season he was brilliant speeding all over the pitch - now Guye does the job with ease and he paasses it forwars too"

2015/16 Premier League:

Ngolo Kante: Games: 37, Goals: 1
Idrissa Gueye: Games: 35, Goals: 0
James McCarthy: Games: 29, Goals: 2

So looks like McCarthy outscored one of the best players in the league last season who helped his team win the title, and the man some people have decided to use as a stick to beat McCarthy with after just 3 games in an Everton shirt.

I have nothing against Gueye by the way, just using him to make my point. Gueye has been one of the better players to the start of the season and I think at this moment, him and Barry deserve to be in the centre ahead of McCarthy. That's not to say that McCarthy isn't a very useful squad player though or that he can't get himself back in to the starting 11 himself.

Why are you judging defensive midfielders by their respective goalscoring records?

Gana is playing ahead of McCarthy because he's currently in WAY better form as a defensive midfielder than McCarthy is, and has been for at least a season.

Cba reading all that. It's not just 3 games with gueye, he was second only to kante last year stats wise and that was in a [Poor language removed] villa side, he's simply far superior to McCarthy. And he's much more positive in play which is the main thing.

Even in McCarthys one good season, his only good season in his career might I add, he still had a lot lacking from his game that he needed to add.

The problem is mate, Martinez was excellent in his first season too.

And his goal rate isn't the problem I have with McCarthy - my problem with him is being completely invisible on the pitch, when Gueye is anything but so far.

The other thing to bear in mind is that McCarthy was operating in a side that was not pressing at all as a unit (it was in the first season under Martinez then it slackened off...and that first season, funnily enough, is when McCarthy got a lot of praise). Gueye benefits from having a lot of players pressing and he's not having to spread himself too thinly across the park as McCarthy has had to latterly which means he can also conserve energy levels and target particular opponents.

Put Gueye in the team last season and he'd have struggled badly.

I remain to be convinced by Gueye, tbh. He didn't even register as a cut above in that woeful Villa team last season and I'm not expecting much from him here. Three games is absolutely nothing to judge a player on. Half a season under his belt and let's assess him then.

Gueye is the better player. Plus if you were in the trenches you wouldn't have to keep one eye behind your back with Gueye.

Judas McCarthy would definitely be Roose Bolton if he was a character from Game of Thrones.

I mentioned why in my post. It was in response to Joey66 saying that he has a 1 goal a season target and i've seen other posters criticise McCarthy for his lack of scoring too. All adding up to this myth that McCarthy is a poor player.

I also agreed with your second post at the bottom of my last one. But you've made this assessment after 3 games. That's why a few posts ago I said I wonder how long before Gueye is slaughtered on here for not being good enough.

Jesus. Why would you think its a good idea to compare goal scoring stats of holding midfielders.
