Used to stand up for the lad. Being irish tried to understand both sides of the club v country debate. But really cant understand how he can continue risking his everton career and how he gets a decent wages from everton travelling to irish internationals when nowhere near match fit. Its unprofessional and wrong.
However i also remember martinez keeping him on when he was feeling his leg after coming back from an injury. He ended up being out for 8 weeks after that match.

As a player he is limited on the ball but was very effective as an aggressive work horse off it. Maybe we wont see that again if he can never get fully match fit.
Really should get his injury fully cleared up. Then a slow re introduction to the team rather than this stop start last 3 years.

You couldn't make it up.

That is the correct analysis IMO. We played him to excess in Martinez's second season, never allowing him to fully get on top of his hamstring injury. It was all hands to the pump at the time and McCarthy paid for it with his career. In fact, he took more knocks than any Everton player I can remember in his first season here and kept on getting back on the pitch. If he'd been playing at a time like now when we have CMs falling out of cupboards he'd never have faced that pressure to get on the pitch quickly after injury...and with injury.

Still doesn't excuse the fact that he plays whilst struggling with injury for Ireland, which exacerbates the parlous state of his shredded hamstrings

Well he didn't play when called up last time and I doubt he will this time.

The main point is that, for me, Keane is right. We need to look at how we've treated this player too, because his misuse by Roberto pretty much dictated what's happening now.

Martinez the physio going against our doctors' suggestions at the time, who told him not to rush McCarthy back.

Think it was the Wolfsburg (a) game he came in for, and that pretty much ruined his hammy.

McCarthy didn't help himself last season like, but the damage was already done.

Shame, because in the 7-8 games he played last year I actually thought he played very well on the whole, the WBA game aside.

I could counter your argument with a dizzying array of facts ish ; but unfortunately I'm off to work.

Yep.

He was injured and playing to excess.

He was, as you know, that important to us at the time.
