When he can reach the level he showed under Koeman v Arsenal and Liverpool before he got injured then he can be very good. If he’s not at that pace then he can be very poor. Was good last night though, and a damn site better than anything Gueye or Schneiderlin have produced this season.

I’m well aware of it. If McCarthy was fit to play for Everton yesterday, and racks up a few minutes in the three games before the play-off, then what’s the problem?

If he manages to take part in those games, then he is fit to play for Ireland - and let’s be honest, he might as well do his best to qualify for the World Cup, because there won’t be any moments of glory to be enjoyed in a blue shirt this season.

Happen he does.

But me?

I would rather he was allowed to work his way back to fitness at his club rather than run the risk of having his injuries aggravated as has happened so often when on 26 County duty.

But I’m funny that way.....I tend to put Everton first
