I agree generally with that sentiment. But then the idea of turning down a player who walks in as one of the 5 or so best players in the league at his position and at a position where we have literally nothing right now is mad. It's the same as if we turned down Koulibaly who is basically the same age. They're at a level where you ignore the age and get them in if possible.
I don’t think it’s a case of “turning down” James, I just think there are better alternatives out there for the cash and wages we’d have to chuck at him.
Rodriguez for me would be like Ozil is to Arsenal. He’s got exceptional individual quality but I fear he’d be in and out the side and games would pass him by.
I just don’t want us to sign him because he’s a “star”, purely for marketing purposes to give the club’s PR a boost.
There's no evidence that he's past his best. You're just assuming that based on his age.
2011-2015 - James averaged 40 appearances per season and 26 G/A contributions.
He was a key player, a focal point for all attacks at club level and international level. A top, all-round player. This James i’d be very much on board us getting, but he’s simply not there anymore.....
2015-2019 James averaged 33 appearance per season and 18 G/A contributions.
Nobody is disputing he’s still a quality player but he’s picked up a lot of big injuries and been on the wane for some time, making, on average, almost 20% fewer appearances per year and this is continuing to decrease.
Last season, he made only 28 appearances all year.
Read into that what you will...
