2020/21 James Rodriguez

. Everton may not be the team of his heart that doesn't mean he wasn't committed to finishing his contract and giving his best when healthy.
this is my view too.. and why I hope no one does come in for him. Amazes me anyone would want to see the back of him, especially here at Everton. He is a class apart from anyone we have at the club and I don’t doubt his professionalism.. he’ll rock up and play..

If Benitez has told James he isn't going to play as media close to James have disclosed, I think James would take that very seriously and Everton fans should believe that Rafael would mean it.

Benitez says very little that he does not mean. Not everything he says is true, but he generally means it.

If Benitez was being candid with Rodriguez, he'd probably say that he threw James under the bus to protect himself from the Madrid media. He probably wouldn't apologize. He would expect James to understand, and think that James had the problem if he did not understand.

There is low interest in JR from other clubs. If he is to find a new club, he must lower his salary demands.
We’ve seen this with lots of our players. Can imagine James may sit out this season here and then go on a free next year if nobody wants to buy him.

It’s not just salary demands, we’ll be demanding a fee for him this window so that plays into teams calculations as well.

Yes, but this price should not scare the big clubs. However, the demand for traditional playmakers who are often injured is not very high in 2021.

It’s the whole package I guess. Fee, big wages and bad injury record. Probably off putting to a lot of teams.

Not arsed anymore. He came here because of Ancelotti, and has pretty much admitted that. Yes, he’s the most skillful player we have, but I really don’t see him wanting to be here. The skipping out of town at the end showed us all we needed to know. That photo was to his fan base that follows him everywhere he goes, not the club he plays for. He’s a superstar and isn’t right for this club at this stage. If by a miracle this club builds something successful in the future, then maybe, we will truly be attracting players like James.

James Rodríguez broadcasted again on Twitch and answered questions from his fans. The two most commented topics were his future at Everton and the news of Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona. The Colombian said that at the moment there is nothing defined with his career and that things can change in the next days or weeks.

"With my future I'm waiting to see what happens, football changes a lot every day, I can't assure you anything. It can change a lot in hours (...) On Saturday we're going to play a friendly against Manchester but I don't know, I'm there, there, there, let's see," James said.

Later he added that he is preparing well in England for what is coming, he wants to be well physically to have regularity, either in Everton or at another club. His continuity with the Toffees is not assured even if he has contract for another year.

"I feel well, it's always an illusion to start a new season, the most important thing is to be healthy. If I'm healthy, things are going to go well, to be able to play is what I want and wait for where we're going or if I stay here, I don't know, it's a doubt that I have right now. I can't tell you clearly what I'm going to do. I'm doing what I like best, training for what's coming, regardless of whether it's here or somewhere else, you have to work seriously," explained the player.

The Illusion of Everton. He may go to United friendly he may be on the plane somewhere like the City game.

Staunch blue is our James.

I worried that translation might cause confusion. In Spanish, 'una illusion,' is used to describe something you are looking forward to or aspiring towards.

Not like a mirage in the dessert or an optical illusion in English - there isn't a deception implied.

Yes. It's a whole melodrama.

James was coming off of a huge first season where he had been named Best Midfielder in La Liga.

Carlo ghosted. Rafael came in. (Sound familiar)

James started the season amazing but then he hurt his calf. It took him a while to recover. During that time, Rafael's Madrid struggled. The press turned on Rafael.

While taking criticism, Rafael deflected and complained that James wasn't training hard. This pissed off James because he feared the smear would stick with him (read: IT DID)

James got called up and played a blinder for Colombia. In the post match, he took a shot at Rafael saying he had been training just fine and working to get back into top shape despite what people had heard.

It's been a cold war with them since. James has been carrying the reputation Rafael made for him in the press ever since. Even when Bayern disclosed that they had intended to buy out his loan until James himself (foolishly) asked them not to, the narrative became that he'd worn out his welcome not training hard enough...

If Benitez has told James he isn't going to play as media close to James have disclosed, I think James would take that very seriously and Everton fans should believe that Rafael would mean it.
It's impressive they they managed to find a manager to not only alienate the fans but also our best player.

It feels like Brewster's millions where he has to try to lose all his money in 24hours.

Oh mate. The FIRST time Rafael had a chance to talk about James this summer, he stuck in the knife and said he was out of shape. He caveated and could say he was out of context, but he's no idiot and knew what he was doing.

See, now I've read the same quotes as you and took different things from them. Bear in mind that James did not finish the season and missed the Copa America due to injury, it's only natural that he would not be at an optimal level, as it would be for anyone. Benitez is assessing the squad and giving an honest assessment of the players he has available, as he sees it. This will obviously be backed up by metrics.

But he did also highlight how good he was and the qualities he brings. You have chosen to ignore that side of his assessment.

As for your Chronology
- James says he wants to stay at Everton.
He didn't, he said he was happy to stay, those are different things.
- They meet and (according to James friendly journo,) Rafael says James needs to go.
This is coming from James side, so it's hardly impartial.
- Rafael says he is out of shape at press conference. Benches James for game two of Florida Cup.
He questioned his levels, is this not allowed? As for benching him, he switched a number of players who started: Holgate, James, Allan and Doucoure.
Everyone played 2 halfs, some started some came on, it's not a witch hunt.
- James friendly journo leaks story about meeting and that James wanted to stay at Everton but is getting booted
Again, James doing the talking. And he has yet to say he wants to stay, he has been very careful with his words.
- James on two sep occasions tells people on social media that he doesnt know where he will be because he can't stay somewhere he isn't wanted.
This is the main point. James doesn't know. Which means it's not decided 1 way or the other. It is entirely possible that we do want to sell him, and if we do, it will be entirely financial. We agree, he is a fantastic player and most people would want him to stay, but as I said the other day, he is 1 of only a handful of players that we could actually make an accounting profit on, and he walks away for free in June.

The club have an option for a 3rd season. We should be able to trigger it any time and he wouldnt need to sign anything.
I find it hard to believe that we can just sign it without him agreeing to it, but let's say that is true. We may legitimately be looking for a buyer if we are in as a big a financial mess as is being reported. This may be why things are up in the Air and why James says its complicated.

I still think if we don't find a buyer, we will sign the extension, because its the only thing that makes sense to us financially.
