2020/21 James Rodriguez

If he felt ready to play, you play him...a-typical hindsight posts going on. Main issue is lack of threats around him makes him easy to mark. Godfrey having a CB mindset and Iwobi's apparent World Class ability to shut down momentum on the other side conspired against him in the worst way possible. Team game...

I said yesterday that I'd support resting him on a regular basis...and got pilloried for it (of course). I think if Richarlsion had been eligible Ancelotti would have done that.

He cant do week in week out this lad. No way does his record suggest he can.

spot on - the big challenge now is the upcoming break. If carlo rests him he will end up travelling and vice versa. Tough bind

He has a week to rest and recover, maybe should have started on the bench today but hindsight is a wonderful thing!!Think he should be OK for next Sunday myself.

He'll be sound as a pound next week won't he Dario. I thought once he came infield 2nd half he got on the ball much more. That's not to say I want him moving from the right.

Today we were just absolutely crap, hopefully the players go and try and get on another 4/5 game run.

I love James, heck, I fantasise about James, but I'm sanguine about him missing a few games. As wonderful as he is when fit, we can't delude ourselves that we are going to achieve something this season if the rest of the squad cannot step up when required.

Richarlison's stupidity last week has left us short up front because we simply do not have acceptable options there. Digne getting his marching orders today leaves us similarly light in his area. I don't see the point of flogging a half-fit James when, in reality, it seems as if we struggle with any kind of adversity in terms of squad depth.

We're going to be a classic "on our day" side this season. We need all our top guys on the pitch to have good days. If James has a knock, rest him. We're not likely to win either of the next two games with the badly-weakened sides we're going to have to put out now. Still, it's a reality check. We've had a wonderful few months since the triple signing week, but winter is coming and we need to manage our resources and expectations carefully now. Carlo has a real chance to expose the rest of the squad to that reality check now over the coming weeks: sink or swim time for many of our squad. The moment of truth can't come quick enough for one or two who we know just aren't up to it and have no place in a squad with serious aspirations to finish higher than 7th.

I got battered on here yesterday for suggesting this.

He is wrong. Our good attackers should be judged on their attacking. We have 8 other players to do the other stuff.

If you look at all the best teams now, each and every one of their players is putting an absolute shift to make life hell for the opposition. I´m not saying he should be at Mane levels of running by any stretch but just more than he showed in the first half when it was clear Godfrey was struggling.

Have to disagree...with the right support he can. Problem is you can't lose two players in an effort to assist another; not in this league. Especially out wide.
