2020/21 James Rodriguez

Ironically, on Leeds goal, had James not tracked back, Rafinha may have passed instead of taking that good shot. He was gonna pass and saw his teammate covered so he shot.

The whole James doesn't track back or run is a myth. He is just slow and has low stamina.

But he defends
Being slow with no stamina well thats what you need in the premier league. He is Özil mach2.

It is about having defensive instincts. As soon as our midfield gets dragged out to the left James has to drop in and cover. You simply cannot stand in the centre circle and see that amount of space and not drop in to cover.

It isn't about going man to man it is about keeping your defensive shape. James sees thirty or forty yards of space but only reacts when Dallas makes a run.

This is where James should be looking to be.

Where the flip are our central midfielders. Why has Allan gone into the left back position when Gomes is already there???

That is a shocking defensive position and just highlights the lack of discipline from our midfielders.

That move summed up Everton in a nutshell. We have Carlo and Rodriguez in but ghost from our passes cancel it all out. Great ball from the new era to the old era who misses and cancels it. Need a few more windows and I hate saying that but cause something we been saying for years and years and years. But Carlo does need a few windows to flush the ghosts out and bring in his players.

I showed you an example of Salah tracking back. His role is either to track back or usually to look to sprint in behind the opposition's defence. Hamez does neither, he hasn't got the pace to hurt teams in behind like a Salah or a Vardy but doesn't cover his flank.

So we end up with DCL and Hamez out of the game when we turn over possession. Hamez is a fantastic talent but his tendency to drift in from the right leaves us wide open on the counter.
Salah is their quickest player so if they keep one player upfront when they get players behind the ball then it is Salah. When they do that though Firmino drops off which means Henderson or Wijnaldum can cover their right flank.

When Hamez doesn't track back then we end up two players light because DCL role is to stay up top. That means one of our midfield three gets pulled out of position, and we get trampled on the counter-attack.
You’re absolutely spot on and have explained the tactical issue well, I couldn’t add to it. It’s glaring, can’t believe you’re getting any push back.

It is what it is with him, 29 by age but carries himself like a 34 year old. Attacking wise brilliant but leaves us exposed at the back.

It's the reason he is here and not in a cl team.
His Job isn't to defend though, mad how people can have a go at Rodriquez for not defending when we are starting games with 5 defenders and two defensive miss as it is
