2020/21 James Rodriguez

I'd encourage people to watch what Son does for Spurs these days. They're in with a chance of winning the league because they've literally told him to stop coming back. We could do that with James and be just as good, honestly we are as an attacking side in the same ballpark as Spurs already, but we don't have anyone with the discipline of Sissoko and Hojbjerg in midfield so we are constantly wide open.
Okay, but Tottenham have a completely different system. Mourinho wants Son to have the energy to run in the counterattacks, while Kane is deeper. He knows he must have this threat - both offensively and defensively. JR is a completely different type of player. He is too slow to pose any danger in the counterattack phase. To me, he is a classic No. 10, but they are becoming rarer and rarer considering how football has developed.

Defensively the system isn't all that different from what we would be doing though. Yes our buildup would be slower but that doesn't preclude us from doing something similar out of possession.

Ok so lets look at some stats, rather tha opinions or perceptions.

Tackles won per game this season;
James: 1.4
Salah: 0.6
Vardy: 0.5

Interceptions:
James: 0.9
Salah: 0
Vardy: 0

The reality is, that James is tackling back 2-3 times more than Vardy/Salah and is intercepting the ball infinitely more. Combined he's about 4-5 times the amount of tackles and intercepts than the above two players.

Yet nobody in their right mind would consider dropping Salah or Vardy, for their relatively (compared to James) poor defensive contribution. I would have no idea, why would would drop someone for lack of defensive contribution who does substantially more defensive work than other players with similar roles for other teams.

James's defensive contribution looks worse, because his attacking work is so good.
All while creating the same number of chances for us as KDB has for City this season (albeit -1 game).
Anyone who thinks James is a problem is deluding themselves.

I also do not completely agree that Son does not work defensively. On the contrary. Tottenham are very good in the transition phase, from defense to attack. The way they play football is the very symbol that players like JR are becoming fewer and fewer. Many more sprints are required, and you have to work both offensively and defensively.

Mate....make no mistake these days a lot of Blues haven't got a jar of glue about Football. You'd be just as well going out your front door and having a conversation with the nearest lamppost to your house.

You can believe what you like I suppose but Son is factually putting in less defensive work than James.

And James transitions us in a different way, but I'd argue is at least as effective.

How do you measure it? I'm not saying I know for sure, because I have not seen all the games for Tottenham, nor do I have the relevant statistics. However, I watched yesterday's match, and Son ran up and down throughout the match. Analyzes from yesterday's match also emphasize this. But if you have any data that disproves this impression, it will be relevant information.

that depends on where you want him to play.

for a winger, I would expect him to mirror the effort of richarlison but we all know he can’t so not sure why you say he is doing what is expected of him.

play him in a free role with little or no defensive responsibility and I’d agree with you he is doing exceptional well with 1 tackle per game.

Well Richarlinson is probably the best defensive forward in the league, so he is bound to fail at that.

Personally I am happy for him to do nothing defensively wityh what he offers us going the other way.

He offers us a lot more than nothing though. He's far better without the ball than say Salah.

It’s a generation of fans brought up on David Moyes for you. Obsessed with tracking back.

I don't measure it by running that's for sure. Tackles, interceptions, things of that nature. But also watching the games I see Son running forward a lot. Not sure he's going back aside from when Spurs go total bunker mode. The first half tactically was different from the second. Kane played defensive midfield after the break too.

And to respond to your other post we can do all kinds of adjustments to make it look like you've got a point here but I just don't think you do. James is both fine enough defensively and doing enough with the ball that even if he wasn't the team could adapt to fix it if they were well coached and had good players elsewhere.

Let it go mate.

James doesn't defend despite of the stats that show he does and we are better playing Iwobi or keeping Theo Walcott at RW than playing this slug. Send him packing to the MLS
